As you can see from the comments here, Tonna was known to be a whiner and a front runner. But the punch was clearly to the back of the head. As I understand the rules, such punches should be regarded as non-scoring and foul ones.
I see. The consensus seems to be that it was an illegal blow but it shouldn't matter because Monzon was a great fighter and Tonna a dishonorable one.
Not really,...Tonna was asking for a rabbit punch and Monzon accomodated him. Tonna was positioning himself for it and deserves no sympathy...no more than another 7th round ko victim who was dispatched under dubious circumstances, namely Jack Sharkey.
No, if you watch it Tonna turned just as Monzon was throwing the punch, which happened to be a wide, looping right hand. It wasnt Monzon's fault the punch landed to the back of the head. If you watch the fight with any objectivity at all you will see that Tonna actually blatantly twice rabbit punched Monzon at the beginning of the fifth and was warned for it. He had also blatantly hit on the break and was warned for that and had headbutted and was warned for that. The difference is when he turned his head away from the action (the second time that round alone he had done so) and got clipped in the back of the head he chose to quit and try to milk it for the DQ win. He was not getting to Monzon, he was not breaking him down, and he was getting tired so he took the only way out that MIGHT have gotten him a win. It correctly didnt. Im not even a fan of Monzon's as many here can attest but this ending was totally justifiable in every sense of the word.
I watched it with complete objectivity. Don't know whether you followed the thread but I mentioned that Tonna was fighting dirty throughout the fight. But that's neither here nor there. Tonna turned his back when Monzon was looking away, Monzon ****ed his hand back, saw that Tonna had completely turned away from him, and stilldecided to follow through with the punch anyway, aiming squarely at the back of Tonna's head. This wasn't a punch that he'd "already let go" by any stretch-- his weight was still behind him, on his back foot when he saw the back of Tonna's head.
Although now that I've watched it a few more times, it seems like maybe Monzon at least holds himself back from putting his body into it and just lets it go as an arm punch?
mrkoolkelvin you are right. Monzon deliberately hit him in the back of the head. Monzon had not let the punch go until Tonna was turned. It's clear on the footage. The question of whether it was justified, and the issue of Tonna being a fouler and a whining b!tch, and a front running coward etc. is- I thought - irrelevant, or at least besides to point, to the question you posed originally. ie. Is it a foul ? Is it a "dirty punch"? YES, CLEARLY. It's funny how so many posts here have been unable to acknowledge that simple fact first off.
