Nobody is being mythologized beyond their actual abilities. We can't say Manny Paquiao had lightning speed and dynamite combos in his prime? Is that a myth? Or that Floyd Mayweather was so hard to hit, he would often shake his head when his opponents missed. Is that a myth? Or that Mike Tyson was so tough, people were afraid to spar with him. Is that a myth? Or that Foreman would put holes in his heavy bags. Is that a myth? Amazing things happen in boxing all the time. Not everything is a stretched exaggeration.
I've seen posters here aver that Marciano had 1.Excellent balance. 2. Great defence. Neither are true. On your points, who was afraid to spar with Tyson? When did Foreman put holes in the heavy bag? I've never suffered from hero worship myself.
I think I'm the only one who has these opinions. Which I know are very unpopular. He did have excellent balance and defense relative to his style. Try emulating his punching style while shadow boxing while staying balanced.
Try keeping balance punching like him. Look how he shifts his weight after the overhand right, and walks Savold down keeping his weight shifted until landing the left hook. https://streamable.com/awe9 mmm
Mrkoolkevin You just don't see the greatness in Marciano that the late great joe rein saw. I and many others see what Joe Rein saw in Marciano. You will never see it. Your mind is made up.
Marciano fell over after missing punches by several feet,he did this in a couple of fights. If you sincerely believe he had great balance we have nothing to discuss. Against the shell of Joe Louis Marciano stated ,"I couldn't avoid his jabs ,I just had to take them." Ditto the first sentence.
Getting back to this Lastarza clip. We see Rocky throw three punches. A sweeping uppercut with everything on it that missed. A left hook that lands. An uppercut that also lands. The incredible thing for me is where Rockys feet are after missing the first uppercut and the impact the left hook makes. His recovering of his footing, winding up the leverage and landing the hook is instant. Three things happen instantaneously. It's almost a jump. Rocky is exactly the correct distance to land one blink of an eye after missing. The final uppercut is instinctive. There is no decision to position himself and take aim like Tyson would. It just comes. For me, as much as the accuracy of the final uppercut is impressive, the impact and manner of the left hook as both a recovery move and punch all in one is the most extraordinary punch in this sequence.
It was impressive. He stayed on his target, walked him down, and landed punches giving him no room to breath. And did it with his balance on the opposite foot.
The Savold fight is one of his worst efforts that is on film,he was castigated by the press after that fight.
This, exactly. This is what separates Rocky from many great punchers, is his relentless pressure, even when he misses a punch. In this clip, he misses three huge punches. But even by missing, they're effective at giving Savold no room to breath. https://streamable.com/0jik
