What's the story behind this fight? How was Pascua, who lost to so many lesser fighters, able to stop the mighty Chiquita? Was it just an off-night for Gonzalez? Even before the head butt, he looked pretty sloppy and was throwing some wide, telegraphed punches.

There was a time when Gonzalez was knocking everybody out and one of the magazines called him the biggest puncher in boxing. It went to his head and he stopped boxing- though, to be honest, he tended to throw wide punches- and I think it affected his training.
Incidentally, Pascua lost the title to Cob-Castro, he lost it to Gonzalez. Cob-Castro and Gonzalez were friends and often sparred one another. Their actual fights were dull but I saw them spar and they went at it.

I actually was at this fight live. It was a very good fight. Pascua fought the perfect fight. It has been a lot of years since I saw it, but my recollection is that Pascua was relaxed, quick, southpaw, used subtle footwork well, utilized and accentuated his height and reach, fired in nice counters, was in good shape, and his relaxation helped his conditioning. Gonzalzez fought aggressively and loaded up with bombs, but he was throwing from too far away, and he fought tight and got a bit tired from loading up too much and getting caught with quick counters. Gonazalez never did have the best chin. Gonzalez should have shown him more respect, taken his time, used more defense, better footwork to get close. He tried too hard to force matters, and his reckless abandon caused him to get nailed too often by a guy he did not respect enough.

If I remember correctly, Gonzales gassed out. I could be wrong though.

Gonzales was really good, but he never had the best chin.

Edit, after reading the above post, I guess I am on the right track. I remember reading about this fight after it happened.

Saw it earlier this week. That's a good description of how Pascua fought in the first two rounds or so, but Gonzalez ended up drawing him into a slugfight around round 3 or 4 and was getting the better of it until Pascua leaned in with his head and opened a bad gash over his eye. The ref missed the butt (I think) so Gonzalez most likely figured that he was fighting on borrowed time and needed a quick ko. Fought the rest of the fight more recklessly and ended up eating a number of clean, sharp counters before the final sequence (in the GIF in my original post).

That was a beautiful ko, and a splendid performance,...I remember reading the fight report of it in a boxing magazine and was very impressed.

Yeah, it is hard to know exactly how much that butt affected Gonzalez, psychologically and physically. It was a bad cut.

BTW, what was the aftermath of the ko like live? Did the fans seem mad that Gonzalez lost or excited to see such a huge upset?

I don't think anyone was angry per se. More shock and surprise than anything. That was how I felt. It was a good fight. The crowd was into the fight. But everyone came to see a KO win by Gonzalez, and were surprised to see him KO'd.

He was stopped by Cob Castro in what I believe was his first defense. He came in undertrained, weight drained, or both and it was one way traffic. Those two fights are the only times I have seen him.

Speaking of Cob Castro, talk about an extremely underrated & especially durable little fighter that no one ever mentions nowadays...

Anyone recall where the odds were like with this upset? Love to know. Just how big an upset was it?

Damn, according to the LA Times "Gonzalez earned $35,000, Pascua $6,500."

I don't know how big of an upset it was. It seemed to me that Pascua got lucky in that he seemed to catch Gonzalez in a moment he hadn't prepared for adequately. So, while I guess he should have been favored against Cob Castro, it wasn't a huge upset in my eyes.

Incidentally, there is a Melchor Cob promoting fights in Mexico and it is the same guy.

Nice thread, some very good posts here, especially from Adam and grey. Insightful.

The cut really seemed to affect Gonzalez who was fighting too recklessly and carelessly already, and Pascua fought the fight of his life. This happened a couple of times to Gonzalez when he seemed ready to emerge as a p4p elite, he'd end up losing in an upset.
