8 Second GIF Primo Carnera paws out his jab at Max Baer, who tries moving away from the ropes. As Max moves to the center of the ring, Primo closes the distance with a jab, and uses his right arm to keep Baers right at bay. Primo then lands a hard overhand right, left uppercut combo. He lands another right uppercut and then gets out of range with a check hook. And then, of course, Baer taunts him. https://streamable.com/rpi0c
I think that's a good piece of footage that shows primo really can box, but a Lot of guys here don't like to decide for themselves if it is black and white film, only one angle and know that primo has had 80 years of ridicule in the boxing press that possibly started right when Primo had an affair with Damon Runyon's wife..
I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. How, in your opinion, do those 8 seconds show that Primo really can box?
That's all you see? Want me to show you the backhands from the Joshua Klitschko fight? You must've missed them, along with the hundred paw jabs he threw. Probably distracted by the beautiful production quality, and the shiny muscles.
You literally took boxing 101, and think you know boxing technique better than Max Baer, who sparred with people like Jack Dempsey, and fought people like Joe Louis.
It's crazy. Didn't you know (even on a classic forum) you are only allowed to celebrate giants who fought on colour TV? These guys are too insecure to look past the years of written bias rather than actual film. Lol
He is landing clean with well delivered quick punches on a world class fighter. What's wrong with you? You can't see him land consecutive blows on a moving target in sequence? You can't credit what you can see with your own eyes? Do you lack confidence in yourself?
Huh? There have been hundreds of heavyweights who could land consecutive blows on a Max Baer. If all you're saying is that the clip proves that Carnera is in that group then fine, I misunderstood you as saying more. By the way, not sure if you watched the clip but Baer had pretty much stopped moving and stood still before Carnera, with his hands low and his head undefended, before the blows landed.
He tried slipping the first two punches. Didn't see the third coming (uppercut). He partially blocked the next uppercut with his glove at his chin. And tried blocking the hook with his left glove and right shoulder while trying to slip back from it. Not the best defense, but thats Max Baer for you. Like Foreman, at times he liked to calmly absorb, using really subtle movements to avoid as much damage as possible.
Carnera was a better boxer than Baer. Baer was a better fighter. I believe Carnera was actually a slight favourite going into this fight, based on his more polished skills and obviously his size, and some even stated he was faster than Baer.
@mrkoolkevin Curious, what do you think of Holyfields guard against Bowe, when he uses one glove at his stomach, and one at his chin. I ask because it's very similar to Baers in this clip.
