I bet some here might be surprised to learn that Galento was an amateur champion light heavy. Somewhere along the line, he probably demonstrated a lot more of that skill everyone is so enamored of...

That is a pretty neat move Galento makes. He gets low and gets his left hand out wide where Louis can't see it. Louis knows it is out there; watch him raise his right glove to block the hook.
But Galento brings his own right foot forward. It is almost a southpaw left, not a left hook, by the time it lands. Changes the angle a bit- and an inch is a mile in the ring-and it is a very hard punch.
He "threw a shift" at him. Perhaps Tua did stuff like that but I don't recall seeing it.

He is quite a misunderstood fighter in that respect.

Many people see him as a bar brawler who became a boxer, but he is more a boxer who reverted to brawling.

For a fatguy he was kind of solid unlike a real fatguy in Buster Mathis sr.

I would contend that he knew exactly what he was doing with his career and in the ring. He was in it for the money and the money was at heavyweight. With a pretty extensive amateur and pro background (he turned pro in the 180's), he put all his eggs into the basket that was his left hook power. If you watch his footage it's all about getting into position for that punch to land. So, yes, there is a method to the madness.

It still never, ever should have landed. More of a knock on Louis than an amazing move by Galento, imo. That being said, for the record I've never intended to suggest that Galento had no tactics or strategy. I just think that the comparison to Tua only works on a fairly superficial level, and does Tua a disservice.

Louis knew the left was coming; look where his right glove is. The other guy was thinking too. He moved his foot and changed the angle.
That is thoughtful, if not sophisticated, fist fighting. Louis was great but he got hit; you fight you get hit.
That move by Galento was more than you reckon. It is either a product of experience or an old time teacher. You won't see it in gyms today

You are most likely correct that no current trainers would ever teach their fighters to lead with such a wide, looping hook (while stepping forward with their back foot) against a serious opponent.

Have you ever considered that it might be doing Galento a disservice?

His win over Lou Nova, comprehensively eclipses anything that Tua ever achieved.

Results have to count for something!

We've discussed this before and I couldn't disagree more, for obvious reasons.

That is the nature of this forum.

Sometimes you can shift the other person’s opinion, and sometimes you just gain an understanding of why they think what they do.

There was a huge momentum behind Lou Nova as a contender, when Galento fought him. He was the #1 rated contender, and some people actually thought that he could beat Joe Louis! Galento was a recent Louis KO victim, who nobody had given a chance against Louis, and he was seen as a sacrificial lamb for Nova.

Galento put on the fight of his life, and defeated Nova.

We never saw anything like that from Tua.
