The legend of fat, old, sick, drunk Tony Galento passing off a cigar and then nearly snapping a heavybag might be my favorite tall tale in the annals of pugilism.

Do you not regard Ron Lipton as a credible source?

I believe it. Why would Lipton lie?

I've read a lot sh*t-talking questioning his veracity. I find him to be an entertaining interview. He's had some great quotes over the years. Not sure the origin of all the hating.

Louis was either a sucker for a hook or had some major defensive issues to get caught that flush. Was there a KD ruled just after the clip ended or not? It looks likes the ropes prevented a knockdown.

Galento ( 5'9" tall, with a limited reach 72" ) though powerful wasn't very skilled. He was ranked #1 overall for a period of time but was also beaten by 25 different men.

I think that Galento just got under his skin to be honest.

Louis decided to tech him a lesson, and was not as careful as he should have been.

He basically let Galento draw him into a slugging match.

My take is a bit different.

Louis was uncomfortable with shorter or crouch oriented fighters ( Godoy, Marciano and Glaento ) and lacked the guard or mobility to avoid being caught.

Louis skills prevailed in the end. Was there a knock down ruled at the end of the clip shown or not?

Lipton has had some issues, and I think was kicked out of boxing. I for one would not fully trust him. For example, he thinks Rubin Carter was a top ten middle weight.

There was no knockdown. Louis stays up, the ref doesn't interfere.

Right after this clip, Louis hits Galento with a hard uppercut, and Galento eases his attack.

I knew Ron, he was a good friend of Carter's so I would say his opinion has to be taken with that in mind. If you look you might find articles he wrote on sparring with Tiger, and Carter. He was also a good friend of Jose "momon" Gonzalez. There is also an article on that relationship. If you can find them you might find them interesting.

I think his last high profile sighting was refereeing Morrison-Ruddock.

I never understood the animosity some had toward him.

Here is a piece of an interview where he compared Tiger and Carter, from sparring each.
Q Compare the experiences of sparring with **** Tiger and Rubin Carter?

    A. Tiger was more solid, durable, stronger in the legs, heavier than Carter by at least 15 pounds in training camp in the basement of the old Garden His focus was frightening, but I was so swift of foot and hand, he could not hurt me except for scorching hooks that would rip my belly on occasion. I kept him off balance, as did Candy McFarland with stiff double jabs and good head movement. I could only hit him jabs and flash right hands, because I tried one day to follow a right hand with a hook and he surprised me how fast and low he got to avoid it and then exploded as I brought the hook back with ripping body shots and came up to the head so hard he hurt my lower back. I never stood still and traded after that but just outboxed him, which he wanted.

Carter-faster hands than Tiger, very fluid, vicious paralysing puncher. I was able to hit him a very hard right hand that hurt him one day, very solid on the side of the jaw, very fast with much juice on it. I weighed 144 and I know I got to him and got my respect. My hands were faster and he signed a picture for me once, it said, "To Ron, you had a great right hand, but I had a better left hook." He dropped me once in over 50 rounds of sparring, but I will never forget it. It felt like my jaw went through the back of my neck. But I had ***** and got up and finished strong with him. Any exercise he did, I did too. Look at the pictures of me then. Our builds were the same, I feared no one, not him, not Tiger no one, but I knew they could both kill you if you let them hit you two three times solid without moving your head. I could hold them both in a clinch and my arms and shoulders were equally strong at the time and even now. Rubin's left hook was devastating, fast, long, short, double up to the body with great speed, right hand was a chop with lots of shoulder behind it, very fast, Tiger, had a right hand chop and a cross which would tear your head off, but Tiger's left hook could actually break your neck. God he was strong.

I don't have anything against Lipton and I haven't accused him of lying. But the human memory is far from infallible, eyewitness testimony is not always reliable, and spicing up stories with harmless exaggerations makes the world a more fun place (while making the storyteller more popular). Boxing observers have been exaggerating the exploits of its characters since at least as far back as the breathless descriptions of the early heavyweight champions...
