What does everyone think of him in terms of as a trainer and as a boxing analyst? What champions did he train apart from Griffith? Your thoughts..
Off the top of my head Clancy trained Rodrigo Valdes, Jerry Quarry, Jorge Ahumada and was even involved with Oscar Bonavena. Excellent trainer. Scartissue
Clancy worked with Foreman for a brief period, and also trained Cooney for his fight with Foreman many years later. He was a very good trainer in my opinion, and a great boxing analyst on top of that. Not long ago, I posted a thread asking authors here if Clancy was still living and what he was up to. Someone replied and said that he was still around, but mainly retired. I believe he's somewhere in his 80's now. Here is a small llink, with a short biography http://www.ibhof.com/clancy.htm
Man, I forgot about Harold Weston and I shouldn't have. I still remember Gil pulling Harold from the Hearns fight - and he had been doing very well against Hearns - because he didn't like the looks of Harold's eye. It was the right call, Harold never fought again because of a detached retina. Scartissue
He trained De La Hoya as well. He was actually an advisor who came into camp to do the fine tuning a couple of weeks before each fight and worked the corner.
I always enjoyed hearing Clancy's fight broadcasts. He always struck me as being a very down-to-earth and blue collar kind of a guy. I always thought the perfect combination of guys to call a fight was Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan...
Clancy was a good trainer, he trained Quarry for while,Buchanan when he was in N.Y. Griffith and Bonavena, who clowned while he trained. Clancy was a very good analyst, and he brought a different experienced veiw to the screne. Old school, top notch at both
I didn't care for his analyst skills. He always came off like a bitter old curmudgeon, downgrading the fighters who beat his charges.
