    been reading a bit about him this past while and watching whatever i can online.
    he was a hell of a boxer. young too at his best.

    the gavilan fight is outstanding.

    so....if i could pass the topic of him to the floor for discussion :)

    Yeah, I agree, excellent fighter.
    I think he was matched too hard too earlier, especially after the Gavilan fight.

    Gil Turner v a young Thomas Hearns would be an interesting fight.

    I agree re the gavilan fight.I remember watching that fight on a 8mm film projector about 40 years ago.
    Gavilan was as hard as nails and simply busted turner up.
    Gavilan must have one of the best chins ever.

    Not an expert on Turner but the Gavilan fight is a great watch. Turner looked like the Meldrick Taylor of his day in that fight; tremendous hand speed and withering combinations and work rate in close, but maybe a bit too brave for his own good and naive as well.

    Outside of Basilio I'd put it as the Kid's best and most impressive win/performance as Welterweight champion.
