He's a big strong, agile kid. Especially for a Mexican. He was a huge middleweight. He's not as gigantic at 168. He recently broke into the Transnational's top 10 rankings.

I'm a big fan. Been for a few years since he was fighting for Golden Boy on FuelTV. I don't see him becoming the No. 1 SMW, though.

    Gilberto Ramirez Sanchez.

What is with boxers all of a sudden being called by their middle names as if they were their surnames? :huh

First last weekend there was "Steve Upsher (Chambers)", now this...

I've only ever seen him referred to with all three names, or just Gilberto Sanchez. Or initialized GRS. Never just Ramirez.

Ramirez is not his middle name its his father's last name, it Latin countries they add their mother's maiden name on to the child's name almost like a suffix, Ramirez and Sanchez are both last names not middle,... that's their official name but most only go by their father's last name. He goes by Ramirez on his twitter page.
I'm sure some Latinos on here can validate that.

    As far as Upsher goes.:conf

Ah, no, you're right about that - I didn't realize that was the case with GRS.

That is the custom in Latin countries, like for instance Canelo's real name is Saul Alvarez Barragan, or JC Superstar's is Julio César Chávez González...

They usually drop the superfluous maternal name on telecasts and official records though...which is why I figured GRS' actual last name was Sanchez. That's how I've always seen it, and commentators (even on Spanish language networks) have called him by Sanchez. :think
