Any thoughts on this rivalry between Roman and Laciar? This is one of the more overlooked boxing trilogies that should be revisited. Very nice styles match up between 2 skilled operators. The first 2 fights were highly competitive and close, the second fight being the best one but stopped prematurely. The third fight was more of a wash out but still a nice performance by Roman against a spent Laciar. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you enjoy watching technical chess matches. Not much interest for this fight series I see. They're excellent fights with lots of skills involved. Both fighters deserve to be inducted to the HOF.
not yet bro, but I am following it. While I am familiar with both guys and more familiar with Gonzalez I plead ignorance and don’t think I have seen one of them. Thanks for bringing them to my attention and I will give some feedback after checking them out.
No worries, whenever you have time I recommend checking them out. Both Roman and Laciar are also very impressive to watch and underrated. Roman is somewhat similar to Miguel Canto and Laciar was like a mini Victor Galindez in a way.
Excellent fights. I think Roman was a little unlucky in the first two, and while both were past their best for the third installment, Laciar was more so. Great skills. I think these are two guys who really ought to be in Canastota and IMO are a reference as to why the IBHOF is not what it’s supposed to be.
I had Roman winning the first, but down in the second. Third I've somehow managed to miss, and I don't have too many regrets about that. Here was my card for the second, I'll look for the first too.
Just watched the first of these and I thought Roman took it. The first 8 rounds were super tight and neither fighter gained a clear advantage for more than a round but I felt Roman stepped up a level from round 9 and simply outslicked Laciar. No doubt in my mind that Roman rightly held onto his title in this one, even if he wasn’t awarded outright victory.
Here’s my card: Gilberto Roman v Santos Laciar 1 1 9-10 (close and cagey) 2 10-9 (close again) 3 10-9 4 9-10 (Laciar landing the left hook well) 5 10-10 6 10-9 (not much in any of these rounds) 7 9-10 (Laciar landed the more effective punches) 8 10-10 9 10-9 (super slick boxing from Roman) 10 10-9 (for the first time in the fight, I feel one fighter has started to take some measure of control and it’s Roman - he’s winning the inside battle as well as the outside now. Just that bit slicker than Laciar at the moment) 11 10-9 (Roman spoiling a lot of Laciar’s attacks and the rushes from the Argentine seem a little desperate) 12 10-9 (Roman finishes the fight dancing around Laciar. He thinks he’s won and I do too.) Roman 117-113 Laciar
Love these fights. Roman was just a hair better, and was, as mentioned, a bit unlucky with the judges to an extent. But really, it was almost like watching boxing against his reflection in a mirror. Very tight, tense contests that tested the focus of both.
