When you think of men that have beaten Luis "El Nica" Concepción - you are generally talking about proven world class individuals. Hernan "Tyson" Marquez was, until the other night, the only known quantity in his L column and Concepción's only 2x conqueror, as well as the only man to stop him. Now he is joined as conqueror (but not via stoppage) by Carlos "Principe" Cuadras, his countryman. Both of them are top notch competitors, or rather Marquez was as of Concepción I & II, and Cuadras undoubtedly is now. ...but what of Concepción's own countryman, who dealt his first defeat - the mysterious Gilmer Baules? Look at this guy's career, es muy loco... He debuted in February of 2006 at super featherweight. He went 4-0 over the rest of the calendar year, failing to register a knockout but popping the cherry of a young Luis Concepción way down at bantamweight. Baules was just recently 22 and Concepción a week away from his twenty-first birthday. While his victim went on a 19-0 (15) run and scooped up various belts culminating with the interim WBA 112lb title, however, Baules disappeared from the ring for 26 months. He never fought in 2007 or 2008, returning to score his first stoppage in February of 2009 and back in action six weeks later in a rapid about-face of activity. That bout ended in a No Contest and he disappeared again - this time for exactly six years almost to the day (one shy). He returned and fought on the Shannon Briggs vs. Zoltan Petranyi undercard, taking on yet another prospect with the same record Concepción had when Baules ruined it. Lightning struck twice. Baules demolished the guy and got stoppage #2, running his very odd record to 6-0-0-1 (2) over the last 11+ years, campaigning in four different weight classes over that smattering of experience. There is virtually no video of Baules available, including of his W over Concepción. Here are some highlights of him battering 3-0 (3) Oldier Landin on the Briggs vs. Petranyi bill last weekend: http://tvmax-9.com/videos/boxeo/noche-de-campeones/13170/gilmer-baules-ganador-por-kot Pretty crude from the looks of it, a wild slugger in Concepción's own vein. Considering that Concepción is bound to return to his native Panama City to lick his wounds and rebound after the Cuadras loss (something he does, historically, after every defeat) a domestic grudge match with Baules - compromising to meet in the middle at bantamweight - could be an easy sell, especially given Baules' recent exposure on TV Max. :think
I just sent him this message on Facebook: Hola, Tengo curiosidad por saber su historia. ¿Por qué has luchado con tan poca frecuencia? Usted tiene una gran victoria como la primera para vencer a El Nica Concepción y usted es invicto, pero ¿por qué las brechas en su carrera? Gracias.
Could be that boxrec have an incomplete record? I know their records of Thai are often wrong and their records of Koreans and Indonesians are some times way off.
True (for instance, Noknoi vs. Mabao III happened a month ago on the Knockout vs. Rachman undercard but they don't have the result listed on BR :huh) - but then again we often see crazy gaps in people's records for all sorts of reasons. Personal issues, jail time, etc. I'm hoping Gilmer replies to clear some of that up. :good
