Obviously, the video was put together just showing his head movement highlights. That being said, his defense is often underrated by both his fans and detractors.

Canelo is amazing. His boxing talent is off the charts. I wont say he's underrated, because he's not (how can you be underrated when you are considered the #1p4p?), the only people underrating him are his haters, and well.. that's what haters do. Anyone knowing **** about boxing can easily see how talented this guy is.

    Good defense for sure.

GGG served him a jab buffet in both fights though.

I was just saying his defense is underrated. A lot of people think of him mostly as an offensive powerhouse.

Canelo could be Locche 2.0 if he was more defensive. (Jacobs, Plant late round 6, Golovkin 2) It's not hard to imagine him with his hands behind his back and slipping jabs like Locche. However, he has offensive responsibilities. He is the perfect mixture of 50% offense and 50% defense.

Great defense that allows him to get back into position to counter.

Canelo's guard has changed over time. He's gone from having a more Duran-esque, right hand near chin, low lead (Canelo never held it as low, or forward as Duran did, though); to an active high guard in more of a Chavez style, to more of a hybrid nowadays. He seems to enjoy using the more elongated, open guard at range because it enticing counter opportunities, lets him take a short rest and both allows him to ascertain a non threatening, enticing posture and also keeps his lead hand closer to both set up sudden, snappy jabs, or counter with left hooks. As he moves in, or gets closer, he tends to keep the guard up reinforces it by actively parrying incoming shots. It lets him stay protected and stay in range to work his better shots. It also naturally puts his hands in position to control his opponents head, base and hands and the general weaknesses of the high guard aren't really exploitable against Canelo because been the shorter man in every fight since Cotto. He works more of a crooked overhand right and uses give and take set ups. I 100% standby my stance that Canelo's head-movement is only good when he turns it on. He doesn't have the eyes to routinely pull off the moves he does against Jacobs in spurts, and hasn't integrated into his style effectively. He gets hit far more than you'd like when he's throwing shots - and he isn't a high volume, combination puncher - he just doesn't have this crazy, Qawi-esque defence. When he's walking somebody down, he's either barely in range and steps back or takes them on his high guard. When somebody punches with him, he gets hit. It's why he's fun to watch. But it's only at key moments when he produces those amazing, flashy defensive highlights. There's even a moment in the end of the third round where Canelo sees a right hand coming, and comically stands squared up in range with his lead foot adjacent to Jacobs, lets Jacobs load up, then ducks that shot, pauses again, let's Jacobs keep throwing shots, which he proceeds to slip. He did it again in the forth; he threw a three piece combo to the body then as the pair reset, Canelo feinted and then squared up with his lead hand down. Jacobs threw three jabs, a right hand and a left hook, Canelo slipped all of them and then paused again, before Jacobs tried to capitalise, and Canelo did the same thing again. Squared up, hands down, made Jacobs miss.

If assuming a posture and stance, squared up in your opponents punching range and literally taking a second to allow them to start throwing isn't 'turning it on', then I don't know what is. Now, it isn't disparage Canelo's defensive ability, it's just to highlight that Canelo is only this incredibly slick, defensive wizard when he focuses on doing so. And to focus on doing so, he has to stop everything else he's doing and keep himself out of position to do anything effective offensive. He's hardly no Duran or Qawi, even if he is really good at it when he does it.

Overall, his defence is good but it isn't among the best ever. He isn't even close to Nicolino Locche.

I think Canelo's defence is his best asset to be honest. When Golovkin got him in trouble in the 10th and he was rocked, he switched on the defence button and GGG had much difficulty in finishing him off. I'll agree with Crowcroft that Canelo has not perfectly integrated his defence and offence but he's miles ahead of most of the field.

Yeah his defence is so great he ate jabs round by round against a 36 yo Golovkin, got schooled by a smaller 36yo Mayweather, ate straights over and over from Lara.

Also, its hard to rate a guys defence when he participates in both cherrypicking and fixing fights

Clenbuterol is a world class fighter and rightfully considered #1 P4P. Nevertheless he's still a confirmed, proven and guilty CHEATING PED abuser. You might answer: Well, everything takes that stuff. Might be the case at some level. Nevertheless only few get caught. Clenboy was.
