Giovani Segura to face Julio Cesar Miranda for WBO interim Flyweight title

    It looks like Giovani Segura will have to face recently beaten former WBO Flyweight champion Julio Cesar 'Pingo' Miranda, before he exercises his mandatory challenger position to face current WBO champ Brian Viloria. In a strange move, Viloria has stated he will be unable to defend his title until december, leaving Segura to chase a big fight in the interim.

    I think this is a very good fight, particularly as preparation for a title shot. It should let us gauge how effective Segura is at the weight, and his performance when compared to Viloria's (Against Miranda) will give us an idea of who will win when they do come to fight later in the year.

    Nice to see Segura continuing on with the story of his career so far: right guy at the right time. Aside rom the fact he hits hard, JC is pretty average in every regard. The only world class fighters he's fought, he's lost to(clear against Pong, clear against Mthalane, and a fairly close one against an arguably past it Viloria), he has a win over the decent Richie Mepranum, but that's about it.

    If Segura has carried up his power at all, that'll be all he needs against a painfully straight-forward Miranda, who will continuously try to bulldoze his way in, because that's all he knows how to do.

    Agreed. He should win for sure, but it's a good fight for him to take. He's guaranteed a title shot against Viloria, being the WBO number 1, so the fact that he is choosing to fight against Miranda (who isn't anything special, but a fighter still at the top of the division) says a lot to me. Segura could just as easliy take a tune up fight against a guy with 4 wins and 7 losses, but I think he wanted to test himself and as a sort of preparation fight for his title shot, he couldn't have done much better.

    If both fights come off, and Segura wins both, then Calderon, Miranda and Viloria in 2011 alone is pretty commendable. Even if they are all slightly past their best.

    He will beat Viloria into a pink mist if they ever get it on. And I mean literally. Even if he hasn't got the power that he had to the same extent as light-fly, he will absolutely positively splatter that man all over the ring.

    Miranda at least has the style to either make it a tough fight for Segura, or force Segura to show some kind of versatility. He'll be in his face, and with his durability I doubt Gio will be able to just blow the guy away as a result, so he'll either find some relative discomfort by having it out on the inside, or he'll decide to move a bit, which he did do a bit against Chango, and pretty much pound Miranda from a distance. If he stops him I will be impressed, otherwise it's just routine really.

    What he should do is go the IBF route and have his cojones handed to him by Mthalane. Who I was going to make a thread on now that he's defending against Sarritzu(in Italy), but, nah. I'll just say that he's a very underrated and quality fighter, who will further prove that he is Donaire's second best win.

    I watched Mthalane's fight vs Johnriel Casimero the other day (After a ****ing hefty search) and admittedly, I was impressed. He pretty much beat down Casimero, and seeing the trouble that Canchila and Hirales had with Casi, that's a more than decent result (TKO5). I'm not sure he ranks above Darcinyan (I presume you rate Montiel as Nonito's numero uno?) in terms of Donaire's conquests, yet. He needs a lot more quality wins to top that, IMO. Miranda and Casimero isn't enough, it isn't even close yet. Mthalane would need 3-4 really quality wins to trump Darchinyan, and that's not out of the question, but at the moment he's fairly far off.

    :lol: What the ****? I meant third, I'm not that crazy.

    Yeah, he's far and away behind both of those, but he's better than Sydorenko, Marquez, Chango, etc. Gave Nonito plenty of trouble too, and it was quite bizarre that he seemed to be coming on a bit stronger when he got stopped.

    Got nothing to do with the thread, but I thought I might add this:

    The WBC has ordered a Selcuk Aydin vs Jo Jo Dan rematch for later this year. Battle of the Euro level titans, and I can't wait. Ionut should exact his revenge for the poor decision in their first fight by outboxing Selcuk.

    It looks like Mayorga vs Bundrage may not happen due to lack of backing by the IBF. Apparently Trout vs Mayorga is more likely. Dissapointed with that personally, I'm sure Don King could slip the IBF a few Benjamin Franklins and get this fight made if he wanted to.

    Goddamit I am a BScene warrior.
