Give Calzaghe a break! The guy's 36! He's proven himself and can fight whomever...

He is too old because it seems he cannot hack it anymore. Who's fault is it? To a large extent, it was his and Warren's. Ultimately his, of course, but he didin't have it all his way - when he was chasing Hopkins in the early 2000ds, he couldn't get Hopkins to bite. At least, even though it was a bit late, he did chase the big fights and he did prove himself. Anyway, what's your point? Fight shouldn't have to support cash in fights, no, wo says they should? And who forces you to be a Calzaghe fan anyway? No one. So, what's the problem? As long as Calzaghe doesn't pretend this is a legacy fight, there's no problem. He himself says he just wants a very big payday against a big name opponent who is unlikely to be able to beat him. No hypocrisy here, so no problem.

couldnt have said it better myself...kessler has never been anything special he fights robotic and is a simple one-two fighter who was befuddled when his tactics no longer worked credit to joe for pulling out the win but its hardly a great fight to call your career defining name on your resume.
Glad im not the only one who thought he was outclassed by hopkins. All i have to say to the people that disagree is if he clearly felt he won the fight why the constant post-fight belittlement of hopkins (jonathan ross show) and why the sudden change of heart about fighting pavlik?? Answer is hes not at the level he thought he was

For the haters there will never be a time to retire because there will always be some up and comer ready to take his crown who he appears to be ducking.

What's he expected to do, fight on into his 40's then once he loses retire to please everyone?

I really wanted him to fght Pavlik but he deserves his massive pay day before retiring undefeated. He has nothing left to prove.

I agree! Calzaghe has fought and beaten the best. He is a sure fire hall of famer and arguably the greatest super middle of all time. Anyone else he fights at this point is just gravey.

:huh you said "cash in" fights were OK and he could fight whomever because of his greatness. I said 'cash in' fights are "gay" and shouldn't be supported by anyone. If he wants to retire, then retire. And that applies to RJJ, Tito, and all the other guys on the 'semi retired' circuit. IMO, you're a fool if you pay good money to see fighters who just wanna "cash in"

    I agree once again, Decebal...

I was thinking about posting a similar thread in the British actually...

The likes of Marciano and Lewis are praised for getting out when they knew it was time, despite having challenges in the form's of Patterson and Vit Klit so why not JC?

It's clear he is in big time physical decline and if he wants a gimme for his last fight, so be it.

how come he's in 'big time' physical decline all of a sudden? coming off of victories over lacy and kessler, most joe fans thought he could beat King Kong and this wasn't very long ago. for a guy whose been in only a few wars and stays in shape as he appears to do, 36 ain't too old.

No one forces you to pay a cent, mate; what's your problem? This is a free market transaction between Calzaghe and his fans. Many if not most of his fans are very happy to see Calzaghe just beating a guy up, irrespective of who he is - this goes for most fans of all boxers - ... but at least give the guy some credit - he is calling it like it is - a money making enterprise, instead of being hypocritical about it and pretending it was a legacy fight. He wants to make money fighting a big name who is unlikely to beat him. Most of his fans are fine with that and willing to pay to see the fight. What is the problem?

I think it's just not being able to turn it on when you really have to, rather than the physical decline. He looked very fast, strong, accurate and fit in training for the Hopkins fight and then, during the fight, he just couldn't turn it up when he realised he was having a bad night. Just couldn't turn it around. This is how the decline starts.

I never said anyone was 'forced' to pay a 'red cent' to see a "cash in" fight. i'm saying anyone in a free market system who does is a fool. that said, i don't see joe c/ rjj as a worthless fight (i think rjj may surprise), but I know i'd rather see joe c vs pavlik. if nobody pays to see rjj/joe c (the lesser fight) in the future maybe fans will get to see the better fight. if you wanna give your money to some rich dude so he can get richer so you can see an OK fight, that's you decision. i'd rather not support such a fight so that the best matchups are made.
