He came to America for the 1st time, fought at a new weight for the first time, fought one of the best defensive fighters in the world and won. All the pressure was on him and in my eyes he beat Hopkins at his own game which is grabbing ,hitting off the breaks, and rough housing. He totally took away his best weapon which is his right hand which after the 3rd was timed and rendered useless. So while it was an ugly win it was a deserved win and Joe deserves all the respect in the world...:hat

I hear everything yall are saying. Bernard made me lose more respect yesterday. You dont win fights one punch at a time, when you getting hit back. Bernard lost his fights to the besthe fought. Tito and Hoya were blown up, and Tarver is not the same after fighting Roy. So let Jones and Calzaghe get it own at 170. And let the **** happen

I already gave him plenty of credit prior to this fight.

credit goes to joe, he showed to bhop he is EVERY MUCH a match for him inside where bhop thought he steamroll joe, i saw quite a lot of times inside joe landing more punches and not giving bhop time to do any dirty head tricks i thought joe is VERY underestimated inside and bhop figured that out and didn't have any other ideas other then his... wait for commit then fly right hand down the middle then grab/hold and work inside.

i give joe calzaghe props for adapting and having mental strength/fighting spirit to come back and control the fight and nullify bhops supposidly advantage of fighting inside

I'll give him credit for winning and being the better man on the night.

At the same time, that doesn't mean I have to have been impressed by what I saw. As mentioned in another thread, I was more impressed by Hops performance in losing, than Calzaghe's performance in winning.

i respect his willingness to fight greats, i respect how he flew to the usa when he really didnt have to but i dont really respect his ability and i am not sure i ever will. i did score the fight for hopins 115--112 but am not crying robbery or anything because joes punch output definatly could have swayed judges. i just cant respect a guy who looks so sloppy and amateur in there. i think hopkins won i think a younger hopkins wins easier and i think many prime greats beat him easy. hes a good fighter but just because he is undefeated with a win over hopkins doesnt make him great to me. sorry

I think the boxing purist in you is making you ignore the fighter in Joe. Yes he does some things all wrong as Nard showed in the first but not for the first time he adapted and overcame. Joe is, and always has been, a true warrior. He knows he has a good chin and has never let his conditioning and therefore workrate be anything less than great - that more than makes up for his perceived technical flaws as he has shown on many occasions now.

yeah he won there is no questioning the decision there. Ill give him credit for employing the proper strategy against Hopkins to beat him. He's definitely not supernatural though as he looked pretty awful. I'll echoe the thought that Bhop was definitely the better looking fighter in there.

i agree in parts, i agree his chin is sturdy, i agree he is a warrior and if he did run into a fighter who had his number i would bet my house on it that joe would do everything in his power to get the win. but i dont think hes a great fighter. he has great achievements but that comes with a bit of luck in my opinion. if he had run into a young jones jr he wouldnt have had such an illustrious winning streak. if he had fought hopkins a few years back which unfortunatly didnt happen i think he loses again. hes good and does what he has to do to win but isnt great. hes not as fast as people think, he cant punch for **** and i am not impressed. i know there are fans out there of his and this isnt meant to start a fight or anything i just dont agree with the common belief in this guy.

I know a few boxing purists and they will never give Joe credit. He is too unorthodox for their liking. The problem though with this way of thinking is that there is no rule saying you have to fight an orthodox fight. Calzaghe fights the way very few people could. His workrate and boxing intelligence alone is enough to be respected for. Its his heart and warrior spirit that he should be admired for!

A lot of the true greats throughout history didn't fight orthodox.
They had special talent as does Joe to fight out of the box, employ
techniques rarely seen and still dominate and defeat their opponents.
Ali was constantly criticized by sport's writers, boxing experts, etc.
back in the day for fighting with his hands down at his sides and leaping
straight back from his opponents punches and pulling boxers heads
down, etc. Now in hindsight he is considered an all time great. Joe
    will be too.
