He boxed (yes BOXED) tit for tat with Floyd for 12 rounds and never looked totally outclassed. The first half was 50/50 imo . I think he won a good 3-4 rounds. Didn't get hit very much, landed some good shots, used the jab well . That's the first time in a long time Ive seen anybody box with Floyd / counter punch and didn't look out of their depth. For a 23 year old with little experience at the top level - pretty dam good.

I think Canelo fought the best fight he probably could have. If he tried to press and maul Floyd all night he would have tired himself out. He should have been more aggressive towards the end though. Overall he made a good effort. Floyd is too good ,, but if Alvarez keeps improving he will rule boxing.

Clearly he boxed because he didn't want to gas, but that was just fools gold
    trying to box a boxer.

I agree. Canelo did all he could in terms of boxing.

First 6 rounds Floyd was not controlling him at all. Very competitive , Floyd got in control in the second half.. but never made Canelo look like he shouldn't be there.

Canelo is the goods .. he's got a lot of years to improve too. Next big star of boxing.

He didn't get 1 clean punch in in all 12 rounds.

OP is right. It was very good early on. Wasn't easy for FMJ.

Canelo did good, although he was outclassed. He pretty much loss every round, but he didn't look like he shouldnt have been there. He showed some skills, and he did manage to land, but admittedly not much flush to the chin, although some did get through.

It's a loss which he can build off of, he didn't get KO'd only given a boxing lesson. He can only get better, he has the skillset. But he should stay away from movers, like Lara until he works on a game plan how to deal with them.

I thought Canelo had a really good game plan. Most people try to adopt the usual Castillo strategy of chasing Floyd around all night and winning on activity. canelo took a different tact and while it wasn't enough to win, I thought it was the best I've seen anybody look against Mayweather since Castillo.

For me, I want to see Floyd against a fast slickster next. This fight proves it for me. I want to see him up against a speedy, mobile mover who is economical and choosy with his output and forces Floyd to press the action in spots.

The more I think about it, the more I think there's something to all those people here who think Vernon Forrest would have had Floyd's number.

For his next fight I would much rather see Floyd against Devon Alexander or Lara than any other fighter.

I don't agree with Canelo's plan for the fight. Nevertheless, it seemed to be a well thought out plan and he stuck to it perfectly.

They say everyone has got a plan until they get hit....well, that just ain't true.

    Props to Canelo.

Not a bad effort from Canelo to 'get in first' regardless of if he was luring Mayweather to come at him or whether it was he who was leading, but he couldn't really touch Mayweather. Cotto and Mosley ended up threatening Mayweather far more than Alvarez but Alvarez showed more in the way of overall boxing talent and has a bright future providing he can find his niche in the 154 lb division. Middleweight would be dangerous for him against top guys for the next many years because he's kinda small, short with an unimpressive reach. Mayweather just took over his only claimed territory.

Agree with most of that post except Lara's got nothing on FLoyd. Canelo would
surely do much better vs Lara.

Except for possibly his ego, Canelo came out virtually unscathed. Will be a better fighter for it.
