I gave Berbick B- . Maybe I am rating in retrospect. Spinks I gave an A to. A the time he was the best. Beat Holmes 2 times, Cooney and that Tangstad guy. No one expected Mike to blow him out in one. Biggs was a shame. They rushed him into fight Mike.

 I always look forward to your wording as you do give good insight despite the knocks/humor. :good

Overall, I think the 80's had some talent with some serious issues and there were major problem with keeping things together.

These three athletes: what did they all have in common?

vs Trevor Berbick 1986: Grade: C+

Extremely overrated, one of the worst titlists ever. High off his ass.

vs Bonecrusher Smith 1987: Grade: C+
Good puncher with some skill, but out of his class.

vs Pinklon Thomas 1987: Grade: B
Very good fighter who was past his prime.

vs Tony Tucker 1987: Grade: B+
Very good fighter who was more or less in the middle of his prime.

vs Tyrell Biggs 1987: Grade: B-
Very good fighter who had yet to hit his prime.

vs Larry Holmes 1988: Grade: C
Great fighter, fought under horrible conditions, and was past it. The most overrated of Tyson's wins.

vs Tony Tubbs 1988: Grade: B

    Very good fighter, solid win.

vs Michael Spinks 1988: Grade: A-
Though Spinks was a light heavyweight and inactive, he was still at the top of the division, a fine fighter, and to blow him out in a round is highly impressive to me.

vs Frank Bruno 1989: Grade: B
    Good fighter.

vs Carl Williams 1989: Grade: C+
Was once a good, promising fighter. By this point, was a never-was with a ton of lost potential. Hadn't achieved anything or demonstrated any recent form to make this a B-defence.

That puts his average at a B-, which sounds about right to me. Not a great era, but he fought just about everybody good in it. Missed a few, like Holyfield, but on the whole, its a complete resume, if not a great one.

You gave Holmes the lowest grade Magna. That's shocking.

As for Suzie, why no Buster Douglas grade? :think

He was in horrible form, dragged out of retirement to be fed to a young lion he was not ready for.

A 38 year old exgreat dragged out of retirement by the smell of cash, rusty as hell, out of shape, and unmotivated.

Great performance by Tyson, but I feel a majority of the other guys on the list beat the Larry Holmes of that night. I much prefer his cowing of Tucker and his blowout of Spinks.

Fair enough, this seems like a harsh assessment. How much better was Holmes versus Holyfield and Mercer? I tend to think this was quite possibly Tyson's best performance so that might be our difference of thought on this one.
