Give some examples when an up and comer, took a big step up and decided to face THE champ, and not only beat him but beat him up badly and in convincing style.

the reigning king must have been a legit one.

Tyson vs Berbick, Holmes and Spinks

They may not have all been THE champ at the time but it fits the general theme quite well IMO considering the brutal fashion he did it in.

    Ali v Liston
Hatton v Tszyu seems to be the best example to me
    Austin v Marquez

I cant remember the name of the Irish fighter who Duran beat in 72 for the lightweight title but that fight belongs in this category.

Nobody has said Pac/Barrer I yet? Come on folks, that was a HUGE upset at the time and a shocking domination.

Freitas wasn't the man, Casamayor was.

Spinks-Ali is the classic example in my mind, although that might not have been enough of a beating.

Neon Leon didn't exactly rip the championship away as much as he fought his way right through Ali's existing but strangely undetected severe brain injury (as did Holmes).

    Dempsey-Willard
    Ali-Liston,to a lesser extant
    Honeyghan-Curry
    Foreman-Frazier
    Hearns-Cuevas
    Monzon-Benvenuti

A couple of things about previous posts:

Norris was the WBC titleholder, and SRL was the challenger when they met.
Berbick wasn't the lineal titleholder when Tyson faced him (Tyson-Spinks might be a better choice for this category).
