U-boats were doing damage at first but their influence waned with the improvement in RADAR technology and Hitlers refusal to Doenitz request to build more. The major decider in the overall outcome of WWII was the Soviet Union. The US only entered WWII because of Pearl Harbour and even then they would have simply fought the Japs in the Pacific. When Germany declared war on the US you guys were backed into a corner and had to fight. Stop watching the John Wayne movies.
I've got a nice list of reading material if you want to learn about it. Britain basically saved Europe for 2 years, by holding off the Nazis, but were not going to hold on too much longer, let alone win the war. The U.S. came in and simultaneously fought all 3 of the main Axis powers. The tide hadn't turned, not at all. In 1941 Hitler was having his way with the Russians still and time was running out for Britain. A few points to put this argument tor rest.....Lend-lease saved Britain. The supreme allied commander was American, the Americans took 2 out of 5 beaches on her own on D-Day. All while fighting the Japanese in the Pacific Theater and dispatching of the Italians in the Mediterranean. Are you really sure the U.S. wasn't needed? I'm not even looking for any "props' for the U.S., My original point was respect should be mutual. PS- Vietnam was a cluster **** for all involved.
The Russians only turned the tide in their own country in 1942 in Stalingrad....let alone the rest of Europe, so figure that out. Only on ESB can we let boxing drift into 70 year old wrold politics. I love it.
Jet Airplanes are British, Tanks are British, RADAR is British, the floating islands used in the d-day landings were British, Submarines are British, all you did was send men.
The US "came in" did they?? The world is in trouble we`d better "come in" You "came in" after Japan and Germany declared war on you otherwise you`d have "stayed out"!!!
I'm British and couldn't give a **** where a boxer is from, as long as he's entertaining and skilled! I haven't seen the fight yet but by the sound of everything I've read, he put on a good show and I'm looking forward to seeing it soon. If he is as good as many are saying, then that's fantastic and as long as he's not a nob, he will have a fan in me.
Yeah....the politics of it all sucked. FDR wanted in....alot of high rankers knew it was inevitable, but congress wanted none of it. Not after WWI and all. That went pretty well for you guys too, ......don't you think? I enjoyed talking to you guys about it. PS- I hate John Wayne movies.
True dat. Though I don't think anyone really has any problems with Denmark (how could you?), except maybe other Scandinavian countries. Trust me, A Brit would much sooner support an American in a fight with a Frenchman, as the French will be cheering on an American fighting a Brit. With all due respect, many Americans seem to think that we are more interested in them than we actually are. In sports particularly, the USA is insignificant to most Europeans, our only interest in an American sports person or team will come when they are against one of our natural enemies (France, Germany and Italy. Though Brits actually really like Germans, it's all just friendly banter against Germany. The French though.... ohhhh the French!!)
Of course but the Battle of Britain was still a huge and extremely important loss for Germany, as was El Alamein and wasn't the Battle of the Atlantic before Stalingrad? But yeah, as you said, the casualties in Stalingrad are just shocking! All deaths in that war are heartbreaking (except for the high up SS and Hitler and his cronies) and I don't believe one death can be worse than any other, whether they are British, Russian, American, Indian or German but Stalingrad, when so many civilians were put to death, basically as cannon fodder. Many sharing a weapon between three people, mown down by their own leaders if they were to turn tail. It's just heart wrenchingly painful to consider that battleground!
And without our help you'd probably be speaking German now. So I guess that makes us even...doesn't it?
Charles De Gaulle was given sanctuary in Britain during WWII and all he ever did was complain. And just to show his grititude he vetoed Britains attempt to join the European Economic Commuinity in 1963 and 1967. This may explain some of Britain antipathy towards France.
