Oh no, Toney made plenty of excuses for that loss, and some are well-grounded. Toney took Roy lightly (a very foolish thing to do), plus he had problems with his trainer Bill Miller and broke off his training camp. Toney had to lose 40 lbs to make weight, and he was very weight drained on fight night. He didn't train properly at all, he thought he was invincible and would just knock Roy out. Still, his loss to Roy is the only loss that Toney fully aknowledges.

But don't get me wrong now, I think Roy deserved every ounce of credit from that victory, ATG Toney was considered to be the #2 P4P best fighter at that time (only behind Pernell Whitaker) and it was not Roys fault that Toney didn't take him serious and showed up in bad shape that evening. And even if Toney had been in good shape, I believe that Roy would have beaten him anyways (but not as dominating tho) - because Roy was just superman that night.

same excuse Duran used for Hearns also. and the same one for Benitez also. Duran overused that excuse. The thing is most people bought it. As though guys like Leonard and Benitez and Hearns were not good enough to beat Duran. They were the best guys Duran ever fought. Ray fought the wrong fight in the first match, and in the rematch he fought his fight and destroyed Duran. Duran quit so that the quitting is what we remember, not the total outclassing. Duran is pretty smart.

People bring up Hagler being a natural middleweight, Hearns breaking his hand, and sometimes they mention his leg massage.

With DLH-Mosley I, I haven't heard too many people discredit Mosley, although some people have talked about DLH's stupid game plan (I agree his game plan wasn't too good but Mosley fought terrific regardless).

Louis-Schmeling 2, well people can always say "Schmeling was old", as he was believed to be past his prime going into the first fight.

I actually haven't heard too many people discredit that win for Louis, but it's a fight in the 1930s, so it's gonna be talked about less around the boards anyway.

I don't really agree with all these excuses just gonna point out the most common ones for a lot of the examples given

    Shane was too small

Hill isn't great, Tito was a smaller guy above his best weight

    Toney was weight drained

Taylor wasn't that great,Tito was past it, Tito was too small, Mosley was too small, Kesler wasn't that great.

Hearns broke his hand, Fraizer was blind in one eye, hopkins was still green, mosley was too small, mosley suffered a cut that affected him in the first fight and the second decision was BS

Don't know any for SRR/Lamottaor bowe holy. Ali smokin JOe there was ref controversy the first time and corner controversy the second time and for Joe beating ali the long layoff is the most common excuse.

Morales was shot, Pac didn't really beat Marquez, Kessler wasn't that god, Hopkins was green, Morales really won the fight, Hearns still wasn't at his best plus he was weight drained

Corrales was under prepared and distracted by legal and personal problems.

Some of the other examples in the thread are fights I'm not all that familiar with so i can't really comment on them but this thread is a perfect example of just how hard it is for a fighter to get the credit he deserves for a win

If you feel like it you can always make excuses, given what passes as an excuse to the average boxing fan.

Going through this thread, I think anyone diminishing a win behind "style" or "bad strategy" is a tool. There are some "excuses" that have some validity, and these don't.

Pryor being coked up for Arguello I is a real issue.

Shane being on EPO for DLH II is a real issue.

Long layoffs, surgeries, and injuries are issues.

A little common sense goes a long way.

I want to PUKE hearing the "Hearns was drained" BS. Anyone trying to take something away from SRL for being the better man that night is either ignorant or a bitter Floyd Boy.
