Give me examples of when this has happened before in boxing history...

I read in The Ring magazine last month that 18 of the 20 experts polled had backed Oscar De La Hoya to beat Manny Pacquiao.

Now, other than to diehard Pac fans, that win is pretty much collectively written off as being meaningless. I really don't want this thread to turn into an argument over whether this collective view of the fight is correct or incorrect, that's not the issue here, the fact is that win is not valued by most people and I think we can all agree on that.

My question is: when else in boxing history has a truly overwhelming favourite (18/20=90%) being totally dominated and beaten, and yet the boxing community writes the win off as being of no real value???

We have been trying to think of another instance which fits this description accurately and can't. Has this ever happened before?

No one new how DLH was going to **** himself up by dehydrating himself so bad he needed IV to keep him alive ;)

Erm, yes I am aware of what happened, thanks. Completely and utterly irrelevant to the thread though. Do you actually have any answer to the thread question at all?

    (a) Nowhere near 90% of people thought the unproven Lacy was going to beat the experienced Calzaghe, nowhere even close.

    (b) That win hasn't been written off to anywhere near the same extent as Pac-DLH has been, that can't even be debated really.

It's not a terrible call, but doesn't really fit the description IMO.

The Tyson vs Spinks fight was huge and quite a few folks thought Spinks could win BUT that was more like 60-40 Tyson or 50-50, alot of people give Tyson very little credit for it. I really can't think of any other instance, Jones-Tarver 2 was a shock but Jones wasn't quite as heavy a favorite due to the last fight.

I see fights were guys win and than you get the hindsight BUT nothing Like Pac vs ODLH.

    **** off with that ****

but no for the life of me i cant remember another instance where one fighter would have been such a favorate yet beaten badly

the bigest upset i can think of would be buster vs tyson but he didnt dominate but he did ko him so id say that would be the closest

Are you sure? Lacy was hot property and many people even in the UK doubted Joe Calzaghe would be win against a young, hungry fighter. If it wasn't 90% then it was pretty high.

I definitely remember checking up on predictions for the fight and Lacy was an overwhelming favourite.

You've kind of missed the point amigo. This thread isn't about the biggest upsets. Douglas got a whole load of credit for beating Tyson (and he richly deserved it, by the way) so it doesn't really fit on this thread.
