    Kostya Tszyu.

I sat back recently to enjoy some of his fights again. Wow. He was really very technically sound in his punch deliveries - fast hands too and very nice combinations.

A mini Joe Louis of sorts, stalking, economical, making every punch count - like Louis the puncher/boxer, KT also had some flaws - including susceptibility to counter right hands.

KT usually struck first before it developed into a real problem (it was a big problem vs tough as boots Vince Phillips).

I don’t know that KT was ever in a boring fight - a real entertainer. When he fought Judah, Zab did a bit of number on Tszyu from first bell.

Still, KT kept his cool. The right hand was missing by millimetres - Judah’s reflexes were great. But with each right thrown and barely missing, KT was intelligently making finely calibrated adjustments - until BOOM, let the Funky Chicken Dance begin - man, I’ll never forget that. LOL.

You should watch Kostya’s training vid on You Tube also. It’s a hoot. KT is very matter of fact and dry in his expressions….so very Russian. He’s punching away at the floor to ceiling and eventually misses the bag after a min or so,- as well timed as his punches, at that very moment, Kostya says “And, remember, don’t be afraid to make mistake, just start over again”. Just as well KT missed the bag - otherwise I’m not sure If he would’ve kindly said “Mistake is okay” - LOL.

PS - one if KT’s most gruelling, early career fights was vs tough Hombre, Hector Lopez. Steep learning curve but invaluable experience and KT came through nicely.

I’ve seen the fight. Yeah, I wouldn’t bank on anything I wish it had gone on longer or till the end. Zarate looked good and that cut would’ve been done by Jeff’s own head or a punch from Carlos. Zarate wasn’t rough and tumble a boar like Fenech he was a credit to pro boxing and if anything the fight should’ve been stopped in his favour.

I used to love watching and reading about Jeff. He was like a mini Marciano in some ways. Good days for boxing.

If only we had a French around today. Wouldn’t hurt if he had power. If Fenech had some anvil in his punch I don’t think he’d ever have lost.
