There was a 45 min programme somewhere on youtube, where both Tyson and Douglas sat face to face and Tyson literally begged Douglas for a rematch, Douglas made no mention of it at all and basically went and fought evander instead and the rfest is history

Yea I agree, there was no way that fight was fixed. At that time most of us thought Tyson was an indestructible force, and my brother figured that was the only way Tyson could lose. My brothers protest was the same as Don King's, you know the slow count 8 count when Douglas was down. He also likes to point to them having the fight in Japan. He believed that's the reason Don King wanted the fight over there, he believed Tyson was a known commodity in Japan and Douglas wasn't, so it would be easy for Don to rob the Japanese. But like I said, the way Douglas fought that night, I personally don't believe too many Heavyweights beat him past or present. It's one thing to dish out an ass whooping (which Douglas did), but he also took some bombs from Tyson. One of the greatest 15 min of fame in boxing, if not the greatest.

His fame has far exceeded 15 minutes. He is in the record books and even the casual fan knows who he is.

On that night douglas was motivated from the lost of his mother. I remember that fight at the tender age of 8yrs old. He would probably have beaten anybody in heavy weight history on that particular night. His 15 mins was only meant for just that, 15mins. Douglas was known as a lazy non motivated fighter. There was only so long he could use his mothers death to spark the fire in him to continue the determination and motivation he needed to take out the other top heavy weights.

This is what else I was wondering, as I started being a fan around this time, and was always a sports fan in general so figured I would have heard this. It's silly to say, but I wonder if Buster was content with the greatest victory in boxing history (upset wise anyway) and figured he didn't need the money. I know it's hard to believe that someone would turn down XX million dollars but I mean until proven other wise this appears to be what he did. I mean even after losing to Saverese he still could have fought. Tyson fought. After all he didn't fight Saverese right after he beat Douglas. He lost to Grant before fighting Tyson.

Ah well, another woulda coulda shoulda.

  7. He didn't go off and fight Holyfield instead, Holyfield was no.1 contender and after Tyson getting a severe beating they wasn't going to put him back in there right away, Holyfield was always going to fight the winner of Tyson-Douglas, obviously no one thought Douglas was going to win but once he did the fight that was always going to be made was Douglas-Holyfield.

    Great post!

We might not agree on Manny and Floyd, but this is bang on.

    I agree with what you've wrote 100%

The terrible loss of his Mum, is what won him this fight in my opinion. It was nearly all psychological. He was asked if he wanted to withdraw, and he said no. He probably wouldn't have given a f**k if Godzilla had been stood opposite from him. He had a will of absolute iron that night, and he took out all of his hurt, anger and frustration on Mike. In my honest opinion, even though Mike hadn't trained right, and he wasn't 100% focused, fighting to his full capabilities, it still would have been enough to beat Buster, had he not lost his Mum. I truly believe that. I think even that version of Mike would have ended up beating Buster, if not for his sad loss. Someone's mindset can play a huge part in the outcome of a fight. People don't realise how important psychology and mental strength is.

He was never going to beat Holyfield afterwards.

A good question to ask, is could he have beaten Holy in Tokyo?
