Would just like to hear your thoughts and views on Ray. How good did you feel he was at his best. Do you think he was a under or over achiever? Did anyone think he deserved the Lewis decision? Discuss......
I dont think he was an under achiever, maybe a little. He definitely shouldnt have lost to Ferguson. He would have had a shot at the undisputed title if he beat him. He kind of had a black cloud over his head. He caught some bad breaks, but overall he was a step below the top guys and it came out in the Holy and Lewis fights, which were close but the talent of Lewis and Holy kind of outshown Mercer. I had Lewis winning by a point against Mercer, but I think that fight did more for Lewis than it ever did for Mercer because Lewis turned the corner as a fighter in that fight in my opinion, he dug down deep and fought his way out of a fight he couldnt win by boxing and using his range. I think overall Mercer did ok, knocking out Tommy Morrison and winning the WBO title, that was probably his highlight. He had a nice jab and an iron chin, but he wasnt a super savvy guy, kind of predictable, and I think thats probably the difference between him and the top guys.
