Nobody puts Sonny in the corner.

 

He had good fundamentals and everything but lacked chin,speed, heart and stamina...he didn't like to train.
There'a a story that Dundee have seen Liston few months before the rematch preparing for a second fight with Ali, he was in the best shape of his life, ripped and training in combat boots but the fight was postponed, and Dundee claimed that Liston he have seen is not the same man that fought Ali in the rematch.
He looked like he aged a lot and he was not in good shape.

100% on board with these rankings! Sonny was a HELL of a fighter--and it bears repeating that he was a LOT more than a slugging brute in the ring. Liston was an excellent ring tactician (Ray Arcel was effusive in his praise for Sonny's boxing skills.) It's a shame that the two Ali fights tarnished Sonny's legacy to the extent that they did--but sadly--that's how most people remember him. IMHO he's easily a top-10 all-time HW--perhaps even top-5 at his best!!

Slow...predictable...telegraphed punches..."Quitter"...You know...REAL boxing historians ...people who have written on the history...who covered major fights over the years...don't have Liston as one of the greats...Bill Caplan has Sonny #11 on his list...in Ring magazine...he barely made the top 10. He has never been thought of as an all time great...because he 'QUIT"...now...lots of you guys have him "Top 5"?...too many trips to the Cannabis shop I guess!

as the second greatest heavyweight -champion in history.The great Emanuel Steward rated Sonny
Liston as possibly the greatest heavyweight-champion in history.The great Eddie Futch had Sonny
firmly in his all-time top 10 heavyweight-champions.But hey,what do these guys know ?

As for Sonny Liston's courage well yes here we go yet again.Sonny showed immense courage in
many other fights.Sonny is no more of a quitter than Roberto Duran or Vitali Klitschko is.
