I like most people can't wait for the fight to happen. I'm a fan of both guys and I can't decide who wins. Head says Manny, gut says Mayweather just can't be beat. A lot of people are saying mayweather is scared and how Pac is going to win etc. I hope 'if' floyd wins that he gets the proper respect that he would deserve. I'm not a Floyd fan anymore than Pac but I do think he gets a lot of **** because people just want to see him Lose (Floyd). I don't think he will be fully appreciated till he leaves the sport
He gave us the fight 5 years late, just like the Cotto fight. It's indefensible, avoiding prime fighters, retiring in his own prime. There's no getting away from it. There will be enough d1ckriders talking him up as TBE if he wins so don't worry about the real boxing fans who know how his career has been managed giving him respect. If he loses, I'll judge him on his conduct post-fight. It says a lot about a person to be gracious in defeat.
He will not get his proper dues, as usual. Everybody said they'd respect the hell out of him if he even just took the fight. He did and those same guys claimed later that day that he is "cherry picking Pac" now and still childishly use terms like "coward" and "disgrace" to describe the current widely recognized best boxer on the planet... Sort of odd. The same pattern has occurred time and time again since the Oscar fight with no exceptions.
What does post fight behavior have to do with respecting a victory or defeat on a resume? See, that is proof alone that your views and opinions on him are all emotionally based and messed up. You even try to sound all machismo with "all us true boxing fans know he was manufactured," blah blah, fvck off with that bull****.
? No they didn't, you don't respect someone for doing what he is supposed to do 5 years down the line. I never read anything like that, just a bunch of people telling the pint-sized little cunt to sign the fight already.
The thread title says "Giving Mayweather respect", are we talking about the man or not? because I don't see resume mentioned in the title. If he loses, I'll judge him on his behaviour and so will everyone else. It's the truth, but you just can't handle it. He retired in his prime, he avoided prime fighters in his own weight class. Keep making excuses because that will never change, it's history. The Pacquiao he's fighting isn't a prime Manny Pacquiao, it's a past prime version. Mayweather refused to fight the prime version just like he refused to fight a prime Cotto. It is what it is.
i've seen a lot of people regurgitating the "pac is shook" line around here, so hopefully pac gets respect after he exposes old man mayweather.
He also fought a who's who of opponents, enough to make him the longest reigning "pound-for-pound" champion of his era. And you can retroactively revise that if you want, but it was consensus, and it is what it is. I don't judge fighters by who they do NOT fight, I judge them only by who they DO fight. The Mayweather that Pacquiao is fighting isn't a prime Floyd Mayweather, it's a past prime version. Pacquiao refused to fight a closer-to-prime version when he and his team admitted to walking away from the fight in the infamous Dec. 2009-Jan. 2010 negotiations over drug testing. He did. And some people can try to revise history to maintain their agenda. But that also is what it is.
I judge them on both, and furthermore when they fight them, I'd also take a mid-career retirement in a competitive division into consideration. If you've ever read a boxing historian's piece assessing an old fighter's career, they look at all these criteria, along with whether the guys they beat were coming up in weight. On the issue of respect, respect for his ability has never been in doubt. His record and character are more questionable, and the questions are valid despite what his fans would like to believe.
All hail Floyd for stepping up and fighting the second best fighter in the world. Get the **** out of here , if you think you are the best then fight the best when they are at their best.
Well then you better hold certain random things against Sugar Ray Robinson including a retirement after one of his first ever losses and for his being on record stating that he would not face Charley Burley no matter what, despite Burley being a top contender and publicly following Robinson to try to get the fight. Wow, you must not rate him very highly at all then if he refused and never fought what some argue was his greatest challenger during his whole career at welterweight. Many of the greatest victories in some legends' careers are against fighters moving up in weight. For example, how often do you criticize Hagler for dragging Hearns up from 147 to 160 for their war and for fighting a badly faded Duran at all? Probably not very often, huh? Those are probably 2 of Haglers' best wins, huh? And Hagler is always considered a top 20 ATG legend, sometimes the GOAT MW, huh? Strange... I would call that a glaring inconsistency (not that I've heard YOU specifically say this, Bollywooden, but you and I both know what I'm saying here and how valid it is). I just wish people were slightly more consistent and not so emotionally clouded is all.
I think a lot of people respects mayweather's skills and accomplishments. No one is technically better than him inside the ring. But outside of it and when he starts talking he will never get respect. Most people want to him get beat simply because they want to see him humbled.
