Rahman was a very good fighter. He reminded me alot of Sonny Liston. Good jab, KO power, and decent fundementals, his problem was not always being prepared for fights. He had the skills to become one of the top (if not THE top) HW in this era. I liked him in his prime and like him even though he's past it. Him at his best /was a threat for anyone. Last night I didn't understand why he didn't attempt to fight on. I'm hearing that perhaps his retina was detatched was I dont know how true the rumors are. I'm not taking NOTHING away from James Toney, he was looking great and was sharp as ever. I'm not making a case for Hasim but I thought mabey he needed a break.
Rahman is one of those dudes who hit a homer or strike out like a Reggie Jackson kinda guy. Rahmans had some great nights in the ring ask Lewis,Sanders,Meehan,he won the 1st Toney fight IMO. Hes had nights agianst guys like Sykes or Cole where he was flat and on paper hed kill them. Hes a much more talented fighter then Maskaev and was beating him clearly in both fights but could stop himself from being KOed. The Toney and Tua fights show a dude with bad luck. I had him winning his draws vs Toney and Tua like most do and the fights where he was stopped he didnt actually lose. Of course Tua hit after the bell and Rahman was never the same after it and we know what happened a night ago.
Thats what I'm saying. He was an exceptional fighter. Very good at everything....at times. Hasim Rahman is probley the greatest "what could've been" fighter ever.
I never really saw Rahman as being this real talented and skilled guy. He was a strong, heavy-handed fighter with a very effective jab, but was a tad on the slow side, not hard to hit, questionable stamina, rather chinny, not especially fluid, etc.... I don't see him being an underachiever who lacked motivation.
He had modest speed to me. I never was that impressed with his talent and skill level. I thought he was a bit of an overachiever, actually. It's not like he was being taught boxing when he was young. He picked it up at a late age.
the guy went far on his athleticism. Those guys are usually the first to fade out Rahman has been borderline shot since he's like 32
Yea, being taught boxing at an older age was by far his biggest downfall. But what can I say, he did very well with what he has been given. Still a top guy in the late 90's early 2000's and will go down in history as a really good fighter who didnt do what he could have. By the way, isn't it nice to have a constructive argument without all the "**** you's?"
He looked like a different fighter, not the guy who was compared to Sonny Liston last night. He didn't have it at all.
guys seriously, rahman is decsent at best. he has a chin, power, a alright jab. hes so if'y too, somedays he ko's lennox in 3 and other days he loses to sykes, He could have been something ... comparing him to liston is a joke, liston had a good chin, devastating power, good boxer, and kinda intimidating like tyson in his younger days.
