I´ve thought about this many, many times. Before I joined ESB I always believed that LL had a great chin!

David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko have shaky chins. Dave Jaco had a glass jaw.

Yes, there is a big difference and a lot of variables.

I guess the distinction is one between balance, accumulation, recovery, and relative power of the punches doing the damage. Morales had unbelievable punch resistance in his prime, and Barrera's was pretty great too, and Chavez never really showed visible signs of distress until getting hit by Frankie Randall in a fight he trained for only with Tequila. So far Chavez Jr's only great assett is great punch resistance coupled with decent power. Huh all those guys have a little something in common ...

Then look at elite guys who don't seem tough enough to handle the punches of the guys they have to fight: Hearns, Jermain Taylor, Jones, Julian Jackson. For the most part these guys are susceptible to accumulation, and Hearns was never sparked by a guy who wasn't a murderous puncher, though he could be knocked down.

I think there are a whole lot of levels to punch resistance, and a bunch of classifications for chins. Hearns had an average welter chin (ie - it took Leonard like 14 rounds to get to him, and Leonard really could hit when he had to) but could be hurt with really devastating punchers often with accumulation and many clean punches (Hagler and Barkley could punch but in fantasy world Hearns ko 1 Hearns with one clean shot). Lewis also had average punch resistance, and when hurt he was hit by real heavyweight punchers but there was not accumulation.

Hamed's chin was good, his balance was crap. He was rarely hurt, and was not even really ever hurt in the stylistic beating Marco gave him. I think Gamboa is a bit more vulnerable but also a balance issue, like Tito - I know Tito was at least dazed in some of his knock downs like Reid but it took a whole lot of accumulation for Bernard to get him down for good. Those guys are not chinny (Gamboa may be chinny on the elite level, who knows?)

Then there are guys like Cotto who has a shaky chin - you can hurt him but not finish him off without a whole lot of accumulation. I feel if Mayweather's defense and instinct were less miraculous he might wind up here, but as it is you have to rank him as a solid chin. His recovery time and ring generalship even when buzzed or hurt is nothing short of amazing. Judah is a step down from this, because while he has okay punch resistance his ADHD and susceptibility to being broken down make him pretty shaky, not quite glass.

Khan is glass. He doesn't get hit cleanly enough but that neurological shut down he evidenced with no accumulation says worlds about his ability to take a punch. His body just can't take it. That punch would have bounced off Mosley with no evidence it had even landed, and probably not hurt Judah either. Usually elite fighters do not get where they are without at least a shaky chin, but khan has such extraordinary talents and speed and style that he has been able to overwhelm and outbox his opponents before they catch him clean. I honestly felt like when Barrera infrequently landed, a much smaller, older, and slower man, Khan backpedaled and was pushed temporarily back. No punch resistance. If he takes a clean shot from Maidana and is not hurt I will be very impressed. There are not many elite champions with glass chins.
