Glen Johnson V Joe Calzaghe 2004 at LH, who wins?

A prospective match, in 2004, at LH - that fell through for what ever reasons. Who wins this one?

    Poll to come...

JC wins it easily, GJ is vastly over-rated.

Johnson had tough battles with Clinton Woods

Johnsons main claim during this time was the KO of Jones

    But Jones was sliding fast

so you can imagine now 2008 Jones is going to be "shot" in a real competitive fight

Calzaghe has to win this Jones fight big otherwise people are not going to be impressed at all

    Calzaghe wide on points.

He thrives on fighters like Johnson.

    Calzaghe, pretty easily

Let's take a look at Dawson, as a template (and I'm quite aware Johnson is old - but he hasn't aged a huge amount). Another fast moving southpaw. Johnson didn't even get near him when he was jabbing and moving early on. This is because he's very slow and poor at cutting off the ring. The only reason this fight was even close is because Dawson is lacking in stamina and chin, and he let Johnson catch up with him and stun his china chinned ass. We don't have to worry about these factors with Calzaghe

Now Calzaghe doesn't really fight like Dawson, he's not so much a runner, he'll likely make this a tear up and fight fire with fire. But its just a crude comparison that shows what a southpaw with speed can do to Johnson. He'll win the battle on the outside with his jab, and can pepper Johnson with shots from all angles as he comes in. Johnson will probably land shots when he gets into range, but that is going to be a very short period out of each round

    Calzaghe UD, 9-3.

    Joe Calzaghe easy UD.

Johnson is a good solid pro but as Kurt said he is vastly overated. He has basically lost to every good fighter he fought excluding Jones Jnr and Tarver.

Calzaghe is too fast and accurate and he would have a field day with Johnson in the manner he did with Lacy.

Joe C UD. Glen is a good tuff fighter but vastly overrated by many. I give him props for heart and taking on whoever calls.

Ditto to that. I have respect for Johnson's fight anyone mentality, but he doesn't have 13 losses for no reason. His reputation has been vastly inflated off of the KO of a shot Jones and the perpetuation of this myth about Calzaghe ducking him.

Johnson KO round 2. China chinned Joe would retire in shame.

Come off it! Much as I respect Johnson for his willingness to fight anyone, he is basically a glorified gatekeeper who has made a career out of one victory over Jones and perpetuating this myth that a much superior fighter was afraid of him. Calzaghe has fought at least 10 fighters who are on the same or a higher level than Johnson. There's a reason he's got 13 losses and his record at 168 was 5-6. Seriously, what is Johnson going to do to defeat a prime Calzaghe? Walking forward a lot is just going to get him a beating the way it did to Sheika and Lacy and he isn't tall enough or fast enough to box him from range. Nor is Johnson any kind of noted puncher to have a chance of a stoppage against a guy who takes a shot well. I don't think JC would stop him as Glen is a smart boxer with a hell of a chin, but he would be well beaten over the distance.

I actually believe Johnson is incredibly underrated. People look at his boxrec and see all his defeats, but he has been robbed on countless occasions due to him fighting in other fighters back yards.

Anyway, Calzaghe would win a clear UD.
