Former light heavyweight champion and currently WBC #2 rated Glen Johnson (48-12-2, 33 KOs) dealt a four round beating to outgunned Aaron Norwood (26-10-2, 13 KOs) on Tuesday night at the Seminole Hard Rock LIVE Arena in Hollywood, Florida. Johnson slowly broke down Norwood, finally prompting referee Brian Garry to wave off the punishment at 1:20 of round four. WBC #14 middleweight contender James McGirt Jr. (19-1-1, 9 KOs) and Marcus Upshaw (8-3-1, 3 KOs) battled to an unpopular ten round draw. Southpaw McGirt dropped Upshaw with a straight left in round one but generally had a difficult time, getting floored himself in the final minute. Scores were 94-94 twice and 95-93 for Upshaw whose late surge fired up the crowd. Jr welterweight Danny O'Conner (2-0, 1 KO), a highly regarded Olympic alternate signed by Seminole Warriors Boxing, scored a good action four round unanimous decision over the more experienced Anthony Woods (6-11, 2 KOs). Scores were 40-36, 40-36, 40-35. Unbeaten jr welterweight Kenny Galarza impressed again as he moved to 8-0, 8 KOs with a second round TKO over Sebastien Hamel (10-15-4, 1 KO). Galarza dropped Hamel at the end of round two and the bout was stopped between rounds. In a stunner, unbeaten 2004 Olympian heavyweight Wilmer Vazquez (6-0-1, 4 KOs) and tough guy journeyman Jerry Butler (7-5-1, 7 KOs) battled to a six round draw. Scores were 59-55 Vazquez, 58-56 Butler and 57-57. In a brutal and entertaining fight, super bantamweight prospect Dat Nguyen (14-1, 6 KOs) took a hard fought eight round unanimous decision over Carlos Diaz (10-16-4, 7 KOs). Scores were 78-74, 78-74, 79-73. Pro debuting lightweight Kelvin Galarza was down in round one but came back to beat Jareem Bryant (1-1) over four by scores of 38-37, 38-37, 39-37. Good to see Brian Garry is hanging in there still. I remember him from many of the early Jones fights.
