I remember it was reported that he was seeing that hooker Kat Lee or her twin sister (or both). I think it was around the time his Sky run was coming to an end.
How good was Glenn McCrory as a boxer? I know he won the world cruiserweight title but don't hear much about him. He was a bit before my time. Better than Johnny Nelson?
I think Nelson was the better fighter physically, but McCrory a good fighter, never a big hitter he was probably caught between cruiser and heavyweight, before this daft new division became a thing. Well schooled, fit and tough, decent box-fighter, but occasionally fragile, especially with the big boys. Definitely miss him and Iain Darke on big fight nights, great chemistry, and no shills, unlike today.
The brief video showing Glenn calling out John Fury is so sad to see. He was a cruiserweight champ, he was a commentator and pundit who went all over the world with Sky TV and he has a wonderful back story regarding his brother David. A play called Carrying David was written and performed about it. I guess at some point he had a family, maybe he still has. Substance abuse and mental health issues can affect the best of us but Glenn had it all really and threw it away. If you want a grim reminder of how far someone can fall, it’s all there in an 18 second clip.
Considering the fact he's hails from a few miles out of Newcastle in County Durham... They even used the word in the title of a tv show "Auf Wiedreshen Pet" about a bunch of builders from Newcastle working in Germany, it's just part of the lingo there.. People need to give themselves a shake.
He was a decent, fringe world level cruiser. His problem was that he was around when the cruiser limit was 185lb; these days the extra ten pounds would suit him better. Comparisons with Johnny Nelson are probably unfair but he made one world title defence whereas Nelson made about fourteen.
McCrory was a good sound boxer. Famous for giving peak Mike Tyson quality sparring. Looked good winning the World crown from solid African Patrick Lumumba who was coming off quality wins over future champ Jeff Lampkin (good puncher who beat Glenn), former champ Alfonso Ralcliff and lost a controversial decision 269 pound James Broad. To see the best and worst of McCrory who just see his title defence against big punching Siza Makathini. Thrilling bout. Always admired how he cameback from 5 heavyweight defeats (2 by clean ko with Hughroy Currie being especially bad and Currie was not known as a banger) to win British and Commonwealth titles and Cruiser and then the World crown. Making must have been difficult for Glenn, I think at 200 pounds he´d beat Lampkin and probably make a few more 2-3 more defences. Would give Nelson a solid fight though Johnny at his best was a fast and spiteful puncher. Excellent commentator too. Currie-McCroy This content is protected
Decent fighter Glenn MC, when he was trying to campaign at HW he was a game guy but totally undersized. Lost his CW title to Lampkin and went up in weight to fight Lennox Lewis thankfully it was a short fight. Used to be very good with Ian Darke on Sky.
In my opinion McCrory was better to watch as a boxer and a hell of a lot more likable than Johnny Nelson as a boxing pundit and bout commentator.
Used to really enjoy him as a pundit. Miss the old days when pundits were good at their job rather than now when it seems to be jobs for the boys for retired fighters who are shite at commentary
Dunno, it's not changed that much. For McCrory - a knowledgeable guy with an accent that doesn't suit everyone - we've got Barry Jones. For Duke McKenzie and Barry McGuigan who used to pop up on ITV/BBC shows, we now get Barker and Frampton. I can't honestly think of an old-days equivalent of Bellew, mind. And nobody's replaced Jim Watt.
