We've all seen fighters give the "I was robbed" speech. What Glen said post-fight, and the way he said it, really hit home for me tonight. That was a career's worth of frustration expressed with more poise than most guys can muster in that situation. I scored this fight a draw, along with a bunch of other people. I am disturbed that three people paid to score this fight objectively each gave Glen only FOUR ROUNDS. Am I the only person who felt for Glen on a basic, human level as he was talking about his age and time left, or is everyone lumping him into the "emotional/ poor sport" group?
I thought that Dawson won the fight...Once again people are to easlier swayed by the late rounds. Johnson corner was even telling him that he needed to pick it up he was close but losing rounds. Johnson is a great guy it seems, and he has had some fights go against him that he should have won but 6 of the 7 people that was scoring the fight at ringside had Dawson winning and the one that didnt had it a draw.
I had Dawson ahead 6-4-2 and 2 of those rounds Glen won he had Dawson hurt. I will give Glen a pass he was not outright robbed but he has been shitted on in the past more than any fighter this decade and he gave us a great performance. That was the best fight of the night. :good
I felt the exact same way. I generally don't care for fighters who complain after losing, but it was different for Glen. An entire career's worth of frustrations came to a head for a fighter who's done it the right way every step of the way. It really hammered it home to me as well, thinking about what it must be like to be in his shoes, knowing he's in the twilight of his career, and going through another agonizing decision. He fought like a champion tonight, especially in the last third of the fight. I got a little emotional hearing about it at the time, honestly. I usually don't put that kind of weight into a post fight interview, but the least Johnson deserved was that kind of respect.
I feel sorry for Glenn, Even though i had Chad winning the fight 7-5, i can understand his frustration. The majority of his losses have been in very close bouts and the judges never seem to favour him. He performed very well tonight for his age and is looking for a big payday in his next bout, which he almost certainly wont get as he doesn't bring much to the table. In the interview he was just unleashing his anger over all the unfavourable decisions that have gone against him in alot of very close fights (This one included). I respect the man greatly for his attitude and longlevity. Glenn has been a great assett to the sport and i hope he can get a big payday to end his career :good .
The short version Johnson felt that the fight was close but that he pulled it out, and that the judges should have gave him the fight because he was on his last leg in boxing and Dawson had a big furture ahead of him and plenty of time to win big fights and money. that about sums it up.
It wasn't so much what he said as the way he said it. What I remember best is that when the interviewer (Showtime's tall-ass, light skinned sister, don't know her name) tried to happy-talk Glen about a possible rematch, he immediately pointed out that having "lost" this fight by such a wide margin, he'd have no leverage in negotiations. And then without missing a beat, they asked Chad if he'd give a rematch, and he responded with a well rehearsed, polite, "hell no" speech. He talked for a good three minutes about what he's sacrificed, how many times the cards have worked against him, making enough to retire, etc. He covered a lot of ground, but it was coming straight from the heart, and didn't have nearly the "whiny" tone of Winky post Taylor. Posting a clip in the aftermath probably won't do what he said much justice though.
Sad.. but Johnson doesn't have much to be ashamed of in his career. He was competitive with or has beaten many great fighters in his career. But nevertheless I hope he achieves what he's looking for in boxing. The sport could use many more fighters like him.
It was an honest, straight-from-soul kind of speech that you can only get from someone who is not a pretentious *****, like most fighters who attempt the "i was robbed" bit. But Glen's feelings about being judged are obviously jaded from past fights and it's an exaggaration to say that he should have won this fight. I can't even picture a draw. It was the right decission, but the wrong score (he won 5 rounds at most) Nevertheless, Glen essentially showed future fighters how to beat Dawson. Any elite light heavy with equal intensity and slightly more power will have Dawson Ko'd soon. Too bad, because I really like seeing Dawson's offensive skill and creativity. As for people feeling sorry for Glen financially...puhhlease...the guy made a few millions already, if anything, he should most likely feel sorry for us.
No. Infact I would love to see glen fight again. On pay per view. I would order it in a heart beat. Because I absolutely loved the way he fought.
You could make a case for Johnson in every fight he lost except the Hopkins, and his lost to Harmon who boxed his ass off that night and made Johnson look old and tired. I never saw his fight with Ottke but I read that it was a job. As far as the Shieka fight...Johnson beat the hell out of that guy. I can still hear Sean O'Grady saying "This is terrible, how could they do that" I believe that Sheika was already slated to fight Calzaghe.
