The distriubtion of the material inside hte glove doesn't give you 'extra punching power'. There are studies and videos proving that an MMA glove and boxing glove both have equal impact as far as transferring force. The difference comes in how the glove protects the hand. Even if theglove weighs the same (8oz/8oz) the fact Maidana has less padding doesn't give him more power as much as it takes away from protecting his knucle region. What's the problem here?

Is that why it much easier to get knock outs with 4 oz MMA gloves on?

Gloves cushion the blow to the opponent.

Big squashy gloves take the sting out of the punch. Yes they also protect the hand more.
Why do you think we spar in 14s or 16s?
If the knuckle can be felt through the glove then the impact is higher and the chance of getting cut is dramatically increased.

i think there was an issue with trinidads wraps before the hopkins fight. not sure i might be wrong. but gloves and wraps make a BIG difference to your punches its not the force that it affects it the damage it makes when the punches land.

I wonder how much padding is on Floyd's forearm and elbow?

See the link now. Okay let's reiterate what I'm saying given the link.

I am saying that AT 8 OZ that the actual lack of padding in the knucle area of the glove is basically a give/take. You think you get a marginal more amount of contact with your knuckles FOR less padding and support around other parts of your hands, and a much higher risk of injury. This is the point of different types of gloves and feels.

As for 14/16 for sparring, your knucles contact let alone the transference of torque into your punches (technique) is not the same. You can't throw explosive snappy shots with 14/16 oz gloves as you would 8oz gloves. Different type of impact momentum transfer completely..

Padding increases the impact time of the blow. The ENERGY (in Joule) of the punch is the same, but the POWER(in Watts) is higher with a harder/stiffer glove or bare knuckles. This is because the impact lasts for a shorter time without padding. It's the same mechanism that makes padding protect the hands in the first place.

Having said that, this effect is probably close to negligible for 8 ounce pro gloves.
24 hours before a fight is not a time to start ripping up the rulebook of boxing to suit your own interests. Floyd should have some respect for the game that made him what he is.

My point exactly. Just a different perspective. Great analogy with physics of energy and power.
