I've noticed that, except for the occasional wonder (Christy Martin, Yessica Bopp, Laila Ali, Anne Wolfe, Amanda Serrano) women boxers generally lack power. Many fights I've seen feature women with records like 22-0 with 4 knockouts, versus one whose record is 10-1, 0 knockouts, for example.

So, I was wondering, should women fight with smaller gloves?

Also, shouldn't we have a forum specifically for women's boxing?

Female boxing sucks. Shields and Marshall are the only 2 female boxers with respectable skill. Even Katie Taylor sucks.

yeah but, aren't smaller gloves supposed to give you more power?

I don’t watch enough women’s boxing to know what sizes they currently use. I know for men in the pros, it’s 8 Oz gloves for welterweight and under, and it’s 10 Oz gloves for Jr middleweight and above. And then for male amateurs, I believe it’s 10 Oz below middleweight and 12 Oz for middleweight and above. What sizes do pro women wear? When I try to Google this, I just keep getting results on recommended training glove sizes.

That’s the point he’s making. There aren’t many knockouts in female boxing so they presumably need to wear smaller gloves to inflict more damage on their opponents.

Nope, No concessions should be made just because they are women. It's a relatively new endeavor for women and they will get better. Just look how far they have came from the Cristy Martin days.

Most women have cast iron chins. That's why there are fewer KOs in women's boxing. I mean how many times have you seen a woman boxer show up in the chin-checker threads? Glass jaws don't exist in women's boxing. :p

I think there is too much emphasis on knockouts in how to improve boxing promotion.

Look at the FOTY threads, I'd say less than half are KOs (and the KOs are almost always late round exhaustion type stoppages). ATG fights like Gatti Ward and FOTC are decisions. The biggest PPV draws of recent years are average at best puncher Floyd Mayweather and a hair above average puncher Canelo.

Obviously viewers like power and KOs, but what really brings in the megabucks are drama, determination, flashy skills/versatile offense, and good narratives/PR. Women can do everything except the flash as good as men. For some reason very few women can throw a straight, crisp punch which you'd think any professional athlete could master within a year (at the very most).

Possibly 6oz gloves would make the mechanics easier? It could also conserve their energy to maybe allow for three minute rounds (which would be a boring disaster with the current talent pool).

But the #1 thing boxing fans like is to see the best fight the best. There was genuine excitement for Shields vs Marshall and Taylor vs Serrano. They keep doing fight a like that they'll grow.

There’s only about 3 women on here and most of the dudes don’t care about it so it would be a pretty dead forum.
As for smaller gloves, I think that’s a bad idea as I don’t think it will cause more KO’s I think it will just cause more damage to the fighters.

They don’t give you more power. What they do is reduce the surface area which leads to a harder impact. I watched a video on this topic a while back but I forgot the exact science of how it works.

Power doesn’t exists in womens boxing. They would get KO’d constantly if they fought dudes.

Katie Taylor is the most decorated active female boxer at the moment. She is an Olympic gold medalist and has won 5 world championships. Not mentioning multiple European championships. 2 division world champion and undisputed lightweight champion.

I would put some respect on my words when mentioning her name.

Three-minute rounds would see more stoppages. How many KDs or KOs happen in the last 30 secs or so of a round in men's boxing? I'd say a disproportionate amount. And taking heavy punishment in the 3rd minute of a round often leaves a fighter ready to go at the start of the next. And remember, women still get a minute between rounds; that's 50% of the round itself.

Only money is stopping them extending rounds by a minute...

The problem with the women fights is that the round often stops before the action can heat up enough.
