What size (weight) gloves were used in different eras ? I know gloves have generally got bigger, with some anomalies throughout the years.

On boxrec a report on a match from 1917 between Fred Fulton and Bob Devere has Fulton complaining he had to wear "huge pillow" gloves because they couldn't find 6oz gloves to fit him. The huge pillows were 8oz.

Jess Willard and Frank Moran contested the championship with 7oz gloves in 1916, and that was probably big sized gloves for the time.

I remember 8 ounce was the standard for larger men when I started watching boxing in the 1980s, but I've heard they often wear even bigger gloves now.

I've read that 5 and 6 ounce were common for heavyweights from the 20s through to the 60s.

5 oz gloves were also used in the 1890's, though I don't know how extensively.

I'm pretty sure 8-10 oz has been the standard sized competition glove since the 40's.

8 oz gloves were used in some states at the dawn of gloved boxing in the late 1800s.

It was unusual but it was not unknown.

In states that did not mandate 8oz gloves they taked about hard gloves and soft gloves. A hard glove was a 2oz skin tight leather glove while a soft glove was a 4oz horse hair glove.

5 oz gloves became the norm in around the 1920s, with 6 and later 8 oz gloves later becoming the norm.

Thought so too, at least in the upper classes like Heavyweight. I know the smaller divisions usually fight with 8-10 oz gloves. Floyd wore 10 oz gloves against Hatton, while Pac had 8 oz gloves against Hatton.

I cant remember hearing about any world championship with 10 ounce gloves when I started watching boxing in the 1980s.
Larry Holmes fights were 8 ounce.
I'm sure I was watching an early Ali fight the other day and they were wearing 6 oz gloves.

Nowadays we have little guys wearing 10 ounce gloves and heavyweights using 12 ounces ?
I'm not surprised really. I saw Amir Khan, a 135 pounder, fight someone last year and his gloves were almost as big as his torso !

The 10 oz have been much more recent, but 8 oz have been used since Joe Louis's time.

I think Marciano and Moore fought in 1955 with 6 ounce gloves.

Not sure about that. Lyle and Foreman in the 70's fought with 8 oz gloves. Cossel made mention that they were a bit smaller than the norm so you might see more knockdowns. I think 8-10 were more the norm in the 70's onwards. I could be wrong.

i think the modern day gloves are chosen in this way

    under 140lbs they are 8oz

    over 140lbs they are 10oz
