This will serve as sort of a repository or dumping ground for recent fights that have been flagged as "of interest, for later review" as ones that bear scoring for posterity and for which I for whatever reason never produced an official live RBR scorecard (busy that day, before I started doing RBR...whatever)

I'll open it up for collaborative & comparative purposes, though - if anyone else cares to watch & score these, whether for the first time or not, and see how in line we are with each other & with the official decisions.

They will all be matches that were either highly competitive or considered to be 'robberies'...in other words, that warrant returning to and having a critical look. The played-out examples that have been discussed to death (ie Lewis vs. Holyfield I) probably won't be cropping up in here...the focus will be more on lesser known but still high-level matches.

Today's installment: Gabriel Campillo vs. Beibut Shumenov I, 2009

    http://sosoboxing.com/boxing-video-watch-online/beibut-shumenov-vs-gabriel-campillo-i/

A few years back I remember watching this and having it by a point to Shumenov. (meaning that in reality, their rivalry ought to have been knotted 1-1 but with the decisions reversed...Shumenov taking Campillo's title at home in Kazakhstan but giving it back in the rematch in Las Vegas)

Let's see how it pans out now...

    Round 1:

Shumenov is meeting the champ jab for jab in the middle of the ring, both cautiously feeling out for under half a minute before Shumenov charges in and lands several uppercuts on the long body of Campillo, pinning him on the ropes. Campillo pushes his way out and puts together a perpendicular guard, right arm wrapped across his torso and rear left held vertically up with the knuckles resting under his chin, twisting and catching the busy 1-2 and stabbing lead right of Shumenov as they circle. Shumenov keeps firing, aggressive for well over a minute until he backs off. Campillo stalks forward and paws down with the right jab, Shumenov moving his head to avoid it while drifting clockwise around Campillo with a little sway-back, measuring for a counter left jab but thinking better of snapping it.

    10-9 Shumenov, close

    Round 2:

Shumenov is leading with big right hooks and putting left crosses up top behind them. Campillo dips away and straightens up to full height, looking to drop a drawbridge right jab on Shumenov's nose. Shumenov circles quickly and nimbly to his right, up on his toes, popping left jabs. Right hand feint by Shumenov, causing Campillo to take a step backward but otherwise not disturbing his defenses enough to create an opening. Shumenov withdraws. Campillo comes forward and sticks a jab in Shumenov's face. Souhtpaw 1-2 by Campillo. Lunging overhand right by Shumenov, thrown from behind the back and missing from outside. 1-2s by Campillo trotting in and out. High lunging right hands followed by left digs on the hip by Shumenov. Campillo is dodging the right hands moving backward but the left hooks are grazing his sides. Campillo ties up and works a left uppercut inside, scraping the tight guard of Shumenov. Campillo finishes the round walking Shumenov down, jumping into his jab and collecting it on his crossed forearms before taking a long spidery step back outside with the rear leg to reset. 1-2 by Campillo.

    10-9 Campillo

    19-19

    Round 3:

Shumenov is working the body intently. Shumenov leaves a jab buried in Campillo's stomach while pumping in a few hard right hands up top. Campillo leans back and catches them partially on the gloves as he wraps them around his cheeks. Campillo is walking Shumenov down with the jab but forced to earmuff on the fly as Shumenov explodes with straight combos lunging upward after setting his feet. NICE counter right hand by Shumenov off the ropes as Campillo sidesteps inside. Campillo fires a left hand lead in pursuit, falling an inch shy of Shumenov's face. Shumenov is dancing toward and then away from the ropes, spinning partway around as he plugs a right hand into Campillo's belly. Right jab over the head, left cross wide of the body by Campillo, missing a 1-2 as Shumenov again executes a matador turn off the ropes. Shumenov is leading Campillo around the ring in a jaunt. Campillo is reaching across the gap with his right jab, not getting there.

    10-9 Shumenov

    29-28 Shumenov

    Round 4:

Shumenov is pressing forward and throwing hard right hands up top, hooking the body as Campillo ties him up and chops at the back of his head with the left. Shumenov is circling left putting up jabs. Shumenov is slipping jabs and pivoting to stay off the ropes as he circumnavigates the champ. Campillo is taking double kick-steps in, lunging with his right jab and left hand lead. Shumenov is dancing away and making him miss. Shumenov tries grabbing Campillo up close and pays, eating a couple of uppercuts but none flush as he backs up and raises his arms to absorb some of the impact. Right hand on the body by Shumenov. Campillo doubles a right jab into the top of Shumenov's head and hacks at the back of his neck with a left as Shumenov flurries into his body. Shumenov tries backing Campillo off with a right uppercut and its force moves Campillo backward but it hits his guard. Right hook by Campillo.

10-9 Campillo, extremely close but he stole it at the end.

    38-38

    Round 5:

1-2s and light single jabs into the face by Campillo as Shumenov bows inside. Right hands up top and on the body by Shumenov. Campillo backs him off with a pair of uppercuts, starting with the left as Shumenov is leaned forward. They fence jabs at mid-range. Campillo tries a long left uppercut but Shumenov flinches back at the last second, causing him to pull it. Shumenov snaps forward with a straight right hand on the chest. Campillo flurries him off and backs up behind the right jab. Shumenov presses in and tries leaning forward to set up a right hand to the body to begin his next assault, but Campillo finds him with the counter left uppercut and a swatting right hook. 1-2 up top by Shumenov, caught between the palms of Campillo. A spray of soft right jabs by Campillo walking forward, some grazing the side of Shumenov's head. Stiff left jab on the chin by Shumenov. Campillo eats it and keeps coming forward.

    10-9 Campillo

    48-47 Campillo

    Round 6:

Shumenov pushes Campillo into the ropes and thuds home several right uppercuts. Shumenov circles away and stays off Campillo's jab while sticking hard rights on the body. Shumenov crouches and rolls his upper body around, staying at mid-range and attacking the midsection of Campillo. Shumenov swirls his head around the plunging Campillo jab, slipping it effectively. Shumenov is tiring a bit midway through the round. Very light left jab flicked up by Shumenov. Campillo walks him into the ropes. Big looping right by Shumenov, digging deep. Straight flurry by Shumenov, surging. Campillo shoeshines his body. The pattern continues as Shumenov backs up a few steps, throws a few hard straights up top, and gets tapped on the belly from both of Campillo's hands. Very even action. Campillo starts to land his 1-2 from a distance on the way in. Shumenov covers up and backs off. Campillo marches into him and Shumenov shoulder-tackles into a clinch, tired. Left hook, right hand up top by Shumenov, blocked. Campillo fires a hard chopping left hand and Shumenov ducks away from it. Right hand lead by Shumenov springing a trap for Campillo, falling just short.

10-9 Shumenov, close and he looked rough at times, but overall quality of work still better.

    Round 7:

Shumenov is pushing into Campillo, jerking his face away from the right jab, dipping and rolling back inside and firing short volleys. Campillo jabs at Shumenov's face walking him to the ropes and then slaps with a bunch of hooks. Shumenov is breathing heavily as he ducks and uses head movement to avoid most of the jabs, but gets cuffed by several of Campillo's hooks from the base of his neck up. Left hand lead on the forehead by Campillo as Shumenov paws out an up-jab on the backfoot. Shumenov is circling left and slumping forward, head down, using his left forearm to bar Campillo's way.

    10-9 Campillo

    67-66 Campillo

    Round 8:

Shumenov is throwing hard right hands up top. Shumenov is feeling it, power-flurrying into Campillo's guard with a few shots getting through high on the dome over Campillo's knuckle padding. Campillo keeps his face covered while laying back and waiting for Shumenov to slow down, then laughs off Shumenov's blows as he slinks off the ropes. Campillo fishes with right jabs and light flurries off the jab reaching in on Shumenov. Ducking and swerving by Shumenov as he circles to his left. Right hand lead shot up from the hip by Shumenov as Campillo looks to back him into a corner. Campillo flicks the right jab up into Shumenov's face but doesn't find it as Shumenov moves quickly backward and laterally. Shumenov switches southpaw and actually gets a few right jabs past Campillo's. Back to orthodox. Shumenov is looking spent, eager for the bell. Shumenov kills time circling into the ropes, then ducking into and propelling off Campillo with his shoulder. Campillo flashes an ineffective jab at him.

    10-9 Shumenov

    76-76

    Round 9:

Shumenov is aggressive, leading now with the left hook on the body and bringing the right hand up top. Campillo eases back and leans away from the right hand. Uppercuts flipped at Shumenov's face by Campillo hoping to catch Shumenov on the way in, left then right. Campillo is caught by a glancing right hand and left hook on the temples while circling away from a corner after flurrying Shumenov into it, partially tripping over his own feet, and goes down. Smoger gives a ten count. Campillo shrugs and sighs but doesn't argue. Shumenov jumps in on him aggressively for the duration of the round but Campillo is able to hold him off with the jab, both hopping in and out.

    10-8 Shumenov

    86-84 Shumenov

    Round 10:

Shumenov is rushing in aggressively on Campillo, throwing right hand and left hook combos upstairs to the delight of the Kazakh audience, who suddenly liven up to cheer him on as the championship rounds get underway. Campillo makes Shumenov scramble outside with a series of wide left uppercuts and right hooks, slapping at high volume. Shumenov ducks a right jab and lets a left uppercut slide over his spine while shuffling in a crouch. Clinch. Shumenov fires a 1-2 but Campillo lays atop him, smothering his shots and making Shumenov's arms fall limply around Campillo's neck. Right hook by Campillo as Shumenov is ducking, just nicking him over the ear. Shumenov's knees buckle slightly. Right hook, left uppercut by Campillo. Right hook, straight left by Campillo. Shumenov is exhausted, flopping in and holding onto Campillo just before the bell.

10-9 Campillo, very close but took it with the volume in the 2nd half

    95-94 Shumenov

    Round 11:

Shumenov is jumping in, burying right hands and tying up. Campillo is dusting the back of Shumenov's head with the left as low tide carries him out. Shumenov is backing up, neck bobbling as Campillo fires right hooks and straight lefts at him, just missing on either side. Shumenov looks ready to collapse but is still defending well. Campillo throws a sloppy right hook and chopping left falling in on Shumenov, landing neither. Shumenov digs a pair of body shots and holds.

10-9 Shumenov, close, ugly, round...Campillo's offense largely ineffective and Shumenov's virtually nonexistent...

    105-103 Shumenov

    Round 12:

Shumenov is putting together right hands on the belt line and left hooks into the ribs. Shumenov leans in on Campillo, wrestling him onto the ropes and hooking into his sides with both hands with his face embedded in Campillo's chest. Campillo backs Shumenov off with a left uppercut. Shumenov muscles Campillo into a corner and is again backed off with a left uppercut. Left hand leads by Campillo, one scoring on the abodmen as Shumenov dances away, one affecting his balance and causing him to stumble as his feet cross. Smoger gives him a count. Very familiar. Each man's knockdown was equally chintzy (but technically both were fair rulings by Smoger). Shumenov is flopping all over the ring, from one set of ropes to another, then into Campillo to clinch. Campillo is slapping all over Shumenov's head with uppers and hooks inside, bullying him into the ropes and probably at cross purposes with himself keeping Shumenov up by providing him something to lean on.

    10-8 Campillo

    113-113

Final score: draw, same as official judge Glenn Feldman (overruled by John Coyle 114-113 and Pasquale Procopio 115-111 giving the MD verdict to a successfully defending Campillo)

What about the 2010 first meeting between Raul Martinez and Rodrigo Guerrero?

That was a good fight and a test of scoring opinion...

 Guys, the object here isn't to have everybody shout out close and/or controversial fights at random. Suggestions here and there are welcome and will be duly taken under advisememt but there is a main thrust here and that isn't it. Each day that I post one up, that'll be the one subject to analytical breakdown and scoring.

People's schedules, unless you have a lax job or lots of personal free time, don't make it easy to watch and score old fights all in a sitting, bht you can either post individual round scores and brief recaps as individual posts and drop them in piecemeal, or simply type everything into a Notepad .txt file saving as you go and then copy/paste when done. :thumbsup

Back on topic, what a crazy amount of lead changes in Campillo vs. Shumenov I on my brand new scorecard. Playing hot potato with momentum. Lots of very close rounds. You could probably watch this annually for three years running and have three different final scores - as opposed to Campillo vs. Shumenov II, which is seen as having been very easy to score and straightforwardly deserved by its official loser Campillo by acclamation.

Too bad they never had a rubber match to put all the controversy to bed at last, their styles pair up well and they really push each other.

    Campillo is too shot now.
