The reason why fights were reduced to 12 rounds.

 

It might've just been a smokescreen, just like boxing changing to day before weigh-ins.

"Look, we care about the fighters, it's not monetary"

 

I think you are on the money there. There's no way they'll even revert back to 15 rounds anyway.

 

I would love for boxing to go back to 15 rounds!!!

 

Switching to 15 rounds won't "revive" boxing.

Boxing needs more mainstream exposure, particularly sponsors to put it on network TV.

 

15 round fights were long, but 12 rounds is enough to know who is a better fighter. Fighters have the clock in their head now, so when they need a knockout they will pore it on in round 10-12 instead of rounds 13-15. Think how fast paced fights would be it they were 4 rounds instead of 12, or how slow paced 20 rounds fights would be. Just affects pace a little.

 

12 rounds is perfect already. 12 is becomes a pain in a boring fight. imagine ruiz hug for 15 rounds instead of 12.

 

The reason they did away with 15 rounds is that many fighters were getting injured during the final 3 rounds. 12 rounds is here to stay, whether we like it or not.

 

It was one ring death (Mancini-Kim) that really (or apparently) led to the change, but even then, "fighter safety" might've just been a smokescreen for monetary reasons with network TV to change it.

The ring tragedies vary in what rounds they went, but Mancini-Kim was on network TV and had a lot of exposure. It was even on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
