Anyone got a link or thread with info. I was wonder how it works... Do you have to win so many ABA National Championships and go into the Olypics and that? Do you have to get spotted? Do you have to be lucky? Any info appreciated :thumbsup
You don't really need to do anything to go pro. I know a guy who was 0-3 as an amateur and went pro and became 1-6 (all losses by KO). You just need to get medicalled, pay the fee and get a pro licence. The difficulty is, unless you have an amateur career you won't make any money out of it as you create no $ for any promoter. People don't know you, and it is unlikely that you are any good. Its really all about whether you will sell tickets. Otherwise, you'll most likely become a journeyman, and thats a tough way to make a living. Thats why usually a stellar amateur career is a way to get a good contract from the begining. Going to the olympics, winning ABAs etc. is just a way to get noticed, get a following, and get someone to sign you because it is proof that you are good. Doesn't mean you'll be great as a pro but its some indication. People may give examples of guys who didn't do that, but they are exceptions. For the average guy, unless you're racking up the wins as an amateur and getting offers, then don't bother and just stay amateur, enjoy it, and get a day job. The pro game just isn't worth it if you dont have top level talent. This is coming from pro's I know who are actually quite decent but not enough to be anything special (one had 76 fights as an amateur for example).
there have been guys who have never had a amtauer fight in there lives. david banks went pro after a few months in the gym but amatuer fights are where you hone your basic skills if you dont then your not boxing your fighting...and you WILL lose and get hurt if your just fighting.
You don't need a damn thing to turn pro. You need to pass a physical and pay $60 for your pro license. You don't need a single amateur fight or any experience whatsoever. Well said.
had an amatuer ask me how he can promote himself. any ideas? he has an amateur record of 2-1 0 ko's. welterweight. how can he get more fights and get his name out there? appreciate any help, many thanks
