The Ring magazine named it their fight of the year in 1982 and then named Pryor - Arguello 1 their fight of the decade, even though it took place in the same year! I favour Pryor - Arguello 1 as the greatest fight of all time (it's certainly my personal favourite anyway) but was blown away by Chacon v Limon when I saw it. The only reason I rate Pryor v Arguello above it is the quality of the boxing skills on display. But for action and drama, Chacon-Limon is hard to beat.
I started going to the gym just before my tenth birthday, to learn how to fight so I could beat up Bobby Chacon, because he beat Little Red Lopez. I forgave him after this fight with Limon.
It was a great fight. But, the skill level was below some other fights that combined action with a greater level of skill. For example, Arguello-Pryor I, Saad-Lopez II, Pintor-Gomez I do remember watching it live on ABC and the ending was thrilling. I got into Boxing as a hardcore fan just a little later - after Boza-Chacon II
These two fighters genuinely hated each other . And there 4 fights were among the fiercest fights ever. This final fight 82 ruined them both and like after Ali vs Frazier 3 they were both never the same.
Little Red was great. Along with Cuevas the hardest puncher pfp I ever saw. The Limon-Chacon fight like Gomez-Pintor Pryor-Arguello Saad-Lopez was all about will and not giving into pain no matter what. To me skill level has nothing to do with it(although these guys were both very skilled as their careers show). The best fight, goat ever is ALL about the action in within those 15 rounds. To me, I have never seen better. Btw, 1 great action rd in Hag-Hearns doesn't come close to making it over all these listed that had that kind of sustained action ALL fight. And for opening rds in the 80s Pryor-Arguello 1st and Dokes Weaver 2 first beat out Hag-Hearns for me. So does Garza-Mesa.
Oh YES!!And On a side note the suicidal Richard Greene was a great ref. But yes, Mancini-Frias was a better 1st than Hag-Hearns.
If we're talking greatest opening rounds, here's my list: -Dempsey v Firpo -Patterson v Johansson III -Mancini v Frias -Pryor v Arguello I -Dokes v Weaver II -Meza v Garza -Hagler v Hearns -Moorer v Cooper
Dokes vs Weaver 2 was also a hard fight fought in brutal heat. Either fighter was never the same after this bout.
It's a lock for the top ten, that's for sure. Durelle vs Moore needs to be mentioned in a conversation about the greatest fights of all time. Shame it doesn't get more "air time".
