I haven't watched this in a while, and what a great reminder of how hot Kelly Pavlik was just 18 months ago. At his best, he is a vicious power-puncher with enough offensive boxing ability to land at a high percentage as well. Before BHop temporarily derailed his career, he was one of the quickest rising stars in boxing. Paul Williams would be well advised to stay the hell away from Kelly because he has never seen anything even CLOSE to that ammount of power. If Sergio Martinez looked like the more powerful puncher vs PW, imagine what KP would do to him.
Pavlik vs the following: Johnson Bedburdick Brewer Dasoyan Gutierrez Cason Beaupierre Zuniga McKart Pierre Zertuche Miranda Taylor 2x Lockett Hopkins Rubio Espino
Like someone said early "Pavliks fights the same way all the time" Pavlik is not a fighter who is known to adjust at all! He has a simple and efficient game plan: punch straight and back you up! When Pavlik faces a skilled opponent he's gonna have a tought time because his style isn't designed for quick counter punchers or guys with good movement! Pavlik's style can really take advantage of brawlers(Miranda) and guys who don't have good stamina(Taylor)!
:blood I guess...if you're a huge Pavlik fan, or a sadistic sucker for extremely one-sided thrashings, yeah it's pretty good. Otherwise.... And even the first two rounds weren't exactly competitive...Pavlik stayed true to his word and executed his gameplan of putting Miranda on the backfoot immediately and himself never took a single squared up power shot with full torque...Lampley shrieking about how they were "trading BOMBS" is just a byproduct of HBO really loving Miranda up until that point. The dude threw a few arm punches here and there all night in between getting his ass handed to him. For Pavlik diehards or people who dislike Miranda, it's as great as Barrera-Hamed is for us MAB fans or those who disliked Hamed. Like that match though - it was far from competitive despite being exciting. So it depends on what definition of "good".
It was a very good fight.Miranda may be on his way down now but for a while he was a dangerous fighter.Someone else already pointed out the trouble he gave Abraham the first time out.By the time they fought again it was not that Abraham had improved Miranda had just started to go into a slide downwards.
you just don't get to the top of the middleweight division in the world by being "unskilled labourers" ... you have no ****ing clue about boxing to say this You are just one of those do-nothings who likes to sit at an arm chair and criticize huh? I am sure you have accomplished a lot in your life, in order to be able to be so critical of those two
Your point is well taken that HBO hyped up Miranda something fierce, boo - and yeah, they pretty much knighted him the #1 Contender presumptive to Taylor's middleweight title figuring he'd walk through the lanky white kid from Ohio (who WAS virtually ignored by the greater public at large before this star-making coming out party)....BUT - I must take exception at you dismissing FW as "some random web site". In terms of credibility, Graham Houston is up there in the pantheon of boxing journalists, IMO - if not on the Zeus throne itself then some seat nearly as high (Poseidon, maybe). He's legit, and on top of being pretty good at handicapping fights himself, is fairly well tapped into the industry itself, particularly the oddsmakers. HBO Sports isn't the be-all end-all, nor are they the entire boxing industry. You know that, boo. Just because they (and some fans on websites like ESB who were all ooh and ahh over the legend of the jaw-shatterer and a blazing knockout of Willie Gibbs - who has a good win over....no, wait, don't tell me....um....) made Miranda a heavy favorite doesn't mean the bookies, independent boxing media, and the other experts did. Graham's opinion means a lot more to me than that of anybody at HBO.
Ah.... Remember Miranda and Taylor jawing back and forth at the press conference like Kelly wasn't even in the room? They assumed they would be fighting for the title.... That was good stuff there....
It was a good fight for the first thirty seconds. Miranda could've been a better fighter if he his management had given him more time to refine technique, and to learn what to do when he gets in trouble.
This fight made me such a huge Pavlik fan. I was rooting for the upset because Miranda was extremely overhypped, he knocks out Gibb in 1rd and is crowned the next best thing, I think I even saw him in a few P4P lists here. I must of watched this fight atleast 20 times on the first week. It was nice seeing Pavlik who was being dubbed as a "The contender" calibur fighter to be an actual contender. You bring up an interesting point, Pavlik had been vocal post -fight that Miranda cant fight backing up, at first I thought "wow Pavlik is a smart fighter and threw up the perfect gameplan" but it really was just a clash of style that suited him perfectly.
