How many times did SRL did it? I think only against Lalonde, wasn't a catchweight against his most dangerous opponents, Hagler, Hearns, Benitez or Kalule.
Second Hearns fight @ 162 for the SMW title. Third Duran fight @ 160 for the SMW title. All his fights above middleweight, basically.
It's funny how when two fighters who are actually strapping on the gloves agree on a certain weight, it's the couch potato boxing fan whose only fighting will involve who gets the last beer or chip, throws a fit.
I don't like it a lot, but I don't really see the difference between Leonard negotiating a ring size the same as a football field for the hagler fight, or other fighters demanding a certain type of gloves (generally pillows when a boxer is fighting a puncher) etc be worn. It's all part of the negotiation, and is generally seen as a bit of give and take "you want me to fight 2 weight classes up from my real weight, I want you to come in 3 pounds under the limit".
It didn't tarnish Robinson's, Leonards or Armstrongs legacies.... And they all had two a peice. Paul Williams and Sergio's fight will be at a catch weight. nard and DLH had catch weight fights so did RJJ. There's a lot of folks who were the best in boxing who had catch weights and it hasn't done anything to diminish their accomplishments. PAC's no different other than the fact that he's been more successful in movign up and dominating than most of the list of fighters I touched on. And you can't compare HW's to Welter weights or middle weight or lower. IT's not the same.
