You're right - it doesn't. From what I understand, Maidana wanted to fight Bradley in the inetrim before the Cayo fight was made. This says to me that he just wants the biggest and best fights regardless of who's in the other corner. I'm positive Khan feels the same way - if GBP told him he was fighting Maiana next, I don't doubt he'd happily take the fight. I don't blame either fighter for any of this - I just don't like the way Golden Boy are handling the situation and HBOs part in it.
How would they build up Khan-Maidana, by pitting both against Bradley, Holt, Peterson? :rofl They'd probably end up with Khan-Maidana after a year indeed, the battle for top-10 jr welter consideration, if at that. :nut
Hard to say if this is really true or not. I wouldn't totally buy into it until something more solid came about. Madaina looks to be a tough big punching guy and is a threat to Khan but I feel he's slowly becoming overrated. Marquez, despite the size and age, is still much better than Madaina. If Khan faces JMM and fighters of that caliber than he's not ducking Madaina. If he starts taking easy fights instead of Madaina then you could probably call it ducking, but not yet.
It certainly isn't going to sell out The Tokyo Dome but it does have its value. I'd assume GBP is paying a substantial amount to ensure that Amir Khan is a moderate box office star in the United States. This maximizes their value in a sense. This is a good question. Ultimately though it works for GBP. Amir Khan gets to feast on lighter opposition and if they're truly scared of Maidana, they can spend all their time hoping Cayol or Victor Ortiz (in a rematch) is able to beat him. Meanwhile it works out for Maidana and Cayo because they get guaranteed fights on the biggest network and will likely get a lot of hype for it. Makes sense. Which is unethical but at the same time understandable.
Khan vs maidana.....1 year later for what??? #5-6 JWW in the world, please!! Is victor ortiz in the mix too? I think maidana is a relatively easy fight for khan, much easier than JMM ( unless they got the fix on ). Khan needs to put up. Fight his mandatory in maidana, a JWW with a good name, then maybe JMM or the elites of 140 in bradley, holt or peterson.
I think you're being a little rough here. The 140 lb is loaded with good fighters but ranking them is nearly impossible. It's Bradley-Hatton then a lot of good fighters and unproven prospects. If Khan beats JMM then beats Katisidis (or someone similar) while Maidana goes through Cayol and say Paulie Malignaggi, wouldn't that put them in the top 5? Then the fight becomes "Who gets Timothy Bradley?" Just a different perspective on the matter. GBP sees things a lot differently than we do I guess.
If this turned out to be true it wouldn't really be surprising. In a way it's also kind of understandable with boxing being a business as well as a sport. As a fan though, I don't give a **** about business, I just wanna see good fights. Now. Not in ten years or 5 years or even in two years. I wouldn't place the blame on the fighters so much. The promoters are creating this illusion of certain boxers being much bigger than they are. They wanna, hype them up, hype them up, then hype them up some more. The fans allow it to happen by purchasing **** ppv's. Fair enough, if they wanna watch it but then don't complain when you get **** fights. Khan should not be on ppv but he's headlining ppv events. Prescott, Barrera, Kotelnik, Salita etc. If you were a promoter why would you wanna risk your cash cow against a difficult opponent when you know if he faces a Colombian guy that no one has ever even heard of (Prescott), people will stay pay money to watch him. Khan could fight Erik Morales and there would be enough people to buy that **** on ppv to line the pockets of his promoters. That's why young fighters are able to have fights that people don't really wanna see BECAUSE THEY WILL STILL BUY THE FIGHT ANYWAY! WHILE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT! In an ideal world, the young prospects would be fighting each other rather than Lithuanian taxi drivers and teachers who we've never heard of and are just there to make the prospect look good. Juanma and Lopez could fight each other now, and then fight each other again in 5 years! One of them will lose, so ****ing what? Is being undefeated the only thing that matters? Sometimes fights will enhance the rep of both fighters and not just the winner. Look at the Barrera/Morales trilogy. Each fight in that trilogy did a lot for the loser, as well as the winner. Look how long ago Hopkins fought RJJ. He lost that fight in 1993. Now lets's fast forward 7 years from 1993 to the year 2000. If RJJ and Hopkins had a rematch in 2000 do you think the fight wouldn't be huge because they had already fought and RJJ won comfortably? It would be massive. Real boxing fans just wanna see the best fights now and not in 5 years. If it happens again in 5 years great! it's a bonus. I don't care about losses because a fighter can always learn from losses. As good as Marquez is, he's too small. If GBP are protecting Khan from Maidana, why would they allow him to face a much better fighter? It's not just because he's a big name, it's cuz they know that even though he's the better fighter, he's also the smaller, older fighter who's never fought at 140 before and even showed vulnerabilities at 135. GBP are using Marquez as a sacrificial lamb. They have a new cash cow and will milk the **** out of him. They can probably squeeze some more $$ out of Marquez but the best way to do it now is to throw his ass away to the young guy Khan and then support Khan. Promoters don't give a **** about the fans (or fighters for that matter), Bob Arum even said "**** the fans" but they can do that as long as they get paid. I've never bought a Khan ppv, not cuz I'm a hater, but because I don't think he should be on ppv yet. In the UK, even Pacquiao/Cotto was free to watch. GBP is a business but a business should be setting a good example and giving back to the fans. GBP is a peice of ****. **** Oscar and **** Schaefer. I wouldn't be surprised if this were true, and I wouldn't be surprised if GBP added a stipulation in the Khan/Marquez fight that Marquez is only allowed to fight with one hand and only allowed to eat cake and cookies during training camp. Fighters are to blame as well to an extent, as well as fans. No wonder the sport is not that popular.
Are you serious? Ofcourse Maidana is much bigger threat for amir than marquez , dude letme tell you this, Marcos Can hurt or stunn amir even thru gloves ,Plus he's very good finisher ,so if he sees amir hurt , he'wont let him recover ,he'll simply break him down , i dont buy that outboxing maidana for full 12 rounds ,maidana will land some shots for sure , he has very high workrate and good stamina which is very bad news for khan, secondly amir probably weights something around 150 lbs on fight night whereas Marquez looks like hes pregnant at 140 , he just doesnt belong anywhere higher than 135, where he's not at his best either , he's just too small too old and too slow for the higher weights. Final Conclusion: Maidana is by far the harder fight for amir even tho p4p Marquez is 3 times better than argentinian.
It is true that Khan isn't ready for Maidana but when you step up to the plate and take a belt off a champion you have to be willing to defend your mandatory fights. Khan't have your cake and eat it Amir, it is making a mockery of the title.
That's the thing though, titles don't mean **** when there are about 6 of them to choose from. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good achievement but a title is supposed to belong to the number one in the division, and that's the other major flaw in the sport that makes people turn away.
