It may be time to evaluate Amidu as a somewhat serious prospect.

Ali Funeka only squeaked by him via majority decision (before his star-making KO of Zahir Raheem and subsequent American TV exposure).

His only other loss is to Ricky Burns, who recently proved his legitimacy by seizing the WBO 130lb title from Rocky Martinez.

Considering he was coming off a two-year layoff tonight, Yakubu Amidu looked pretty good.

I think it's probably time for Gary to start raising his comp a little bit. I honestly think he's got a legit chance at throwing everyone's plans at FW for a loop.

Next month's Fight Night Club has a good main event.

Carlos Molina is 24 years old and undefeated, keeping a respectable schedule (this will be his fifth fight of 2010) and stepping up against Oxnard's own David Rodela (who's spoiled the plans of a few prospects, and holds a win over a wizened Kevin Kelley).

Sorry honestly I cant see Amidu as anything less than a much lesser Ben Tackie. I just dont see him being anything more than a maybe a gatekeeper ever ...who knows though i've been wrong before.

de Leon does have a losing record, but he did beat former Golden Boy prospect Derrick Wilson, though I expect Gary Jr. to beat this dude up

    Round 1

Russell gets on that fast southpaw jab right away. The right hand starts to materialize right behind it on the right eye socket of De Leon. Russell barely moves his feet, just picking De Leon off with long jabs while watching him bob and circle. Lupillo crouches and covers up, throwing his orthodox jab nice and straight, but is way too slow to land it without taking a couple in return. Russell starts to follow his jab to the face with lefts to the body, both as arrows and looped low as an uppercut.

    10-9 Russell

    Round 2

Russell is keeping his workrate low, which just accentuates his single-punch hand speed. Right hooks bounce off the head of De Leon while jabs reach his nose with laser precision and left hands whip him unexpectedly in the body as he's blinking them off. De Leon is scoring in a few little bursts of body punching per minute but clearly losing the round to the fast and accurate Russell.

    Round 3

De Leon tucks his gloves under his chin and wades through the crashing tide to try and land a few right uppercuts and left hooks to the body. Russell is now backing up but exploding with six and seven punch combos of straight punches. De Leon is able to walk him down and lean on him, going to the body. Russell decides to try and beat him at this game, working his quick hands on the inside while standing straight up and making De Leon miss. A straight left cross bangs De Leon on the chin as Russell starts to separate a bit. De Leon is hurt by a follow up flurry but saved by the bell.

I think Russell was doing best in the first round where he used his snaping jab a lot more but if he wants to stay in pocket and use his superior speed im not gonna knock him too much I dont think he's threatened in any way by Leon so why not.

    Round 4

Russell keeps the right hand working, alternately jabbing and hooking. De Leon tightens his guard and keeps his feet moving with a few direction changes but can't stay away from the stinging jab and hard left cross. De Leon tries a few hard hooks from out of the guard and Russell is simply punching through the gap and forcing him to close rank again. Hard lefts smash into the chin of De Leon. A big three punch combo lands for Russell but De Leon times the end of it to land a nice jab. De Leon is moving and defending fairly well but can't get a defensive opening with the speed and accuracy of Russell.

    40-36 Russell

Yeah, he seems to be taking this as a chance to work on a few things. High-stakes sparring instead of the usual blowout.

Yea, it's good for him though, he's showing off good stuff at all ranges and he certainly needs to get his rounds in, this guy is a competent opponent to fight this fight with
