Round 5

Russell is able to land in combination, sometimes landing three jabs before his left cross even lands, then retracting and doubling the left and landing another few jabs all in the span of a single breath. De Leon is holding his gloves responsibly high but has very few opportunities to punch in between the combos. He is certainly game and trying to stay close and defending himself intelligently, clearly looking for the openings that aren't there and hoping for a lucky moment. Russell begins to bark as he unloads rapid-fire combos and bending his knees to spring off to either side and create more angles. Russell keeps his right arm hanging down low beneath his waist as De Leon is throwing almost nothing back, paralyzed by Russell's speed.

 

Round 6

Russell's hands resemble the keys of a typewriter in action (assuming the person using it types like 90 words per minute). De Leon is still right there, looking for his one big chance at a big shot but unable to get past those incredibly swift and lengthy flashes. They hook together and De Leon does land a couple nicely but gets quickly backed off by the increasingly aggressive Russell. De Leon glides to his left on the outside and tries to find an angle to rush in but Russell matches his foot speed easily and doesn't give him anything to work with.

 

Gary Russell Jr. is now the DeWalt Power Tools Featherweight Champion!

Interesting note: the last time someone went the distance against Gary Rusell Jr. (or even made it out of the first three rounds) was Noe Lopez Jr. from the undercard...eight fights ago in December 2009.

The kid is probably ready to graduate to bouts scheduled for 8.

It looks like there might be a couple of swing bouts coming up.

They're showing highlights of Carlos Molina (next month's headliner) - he looks pretty good offensively. Doug Fischer is making fun of his Taxi Driver mohawk...because he's in a position to critique anyone's hair-do...

 

They're showing HL of Shane Mosley Jr. (the son of Sugar) in an amateur bout from the undercard!!!!! :shock:

He's a damn skinny kid. He is also slow to pull the trigger and got banged out by this short pressure fighter in most of the exchanges shown. I guess he lost?

 

Here are the swing bouts - they aren't part of the FSN broadcast, so there's no commentary. It's just the audio from the microphones on the cameras and around the ring. :good

3-fight (and 3-FNC) veteran Ramon Valadez is taking on Aaron Anderson, who's won once in nine fights but never been stopped.

 

Round 1

Anderson is a compact and soft-bodied little dude, in stark contrast to the lean musculature of the beanpole Valadez. Anderson is also negative as hell, literally prancing around the ring and clearly not trying to engage in any serious manner. Valadez keeps walking him down and looking to take his head off with a left hook. Anderson puts his hands behind his back and sticks his chin out from well outside the range of Valadez, and throws a few body punches here and there in between his antics. Valadez is the only one throwing anything serious. AND IT GETS SERIOUS after the bell. They continue to fight and talk smack until their corners rush into the ring to break them up. It's shocking this hasn't been stopped as a DQ either way.
