I'm a bit disappointed myself. Even for FNC standards this slate is a little poor.

Maybe we'll get some tasty knockouts out of it, in any event.

also, not on this card, but a different California card, Takashi Okada is fighting (the guy who upset McWilliam Arroyo in a good fight)

    Round 3

Maldonado continues using the right jab (according to Fischer, it only just appeared now). Sanchez is backed up and is slapping out at Maldonado, able to create a tangled mess of arms to hinder Maldonado's advances and keep his head held higher than Fidel can comfortably punch from the outside. The pace slows as Sanchez tries for a right to the body and gets a little bold, bending down and poking his way in and potshotting. Maldonado is pretty easily discouraging all of these meager attempts at offense by chasing him away with quick counters, but is not very busy himself.

Another 10-9 Maldonado (I'm not giving my overall score until someone tells me how the hell to score that first round  ).

    Round 4

Sanchez uses some outside movement and launches a few right hands, then raises his arm up to play up to the crowd. Maldonado plugs his nostrils with a swift left cross. Sanchez keeps trying to circle and jab but is just much slower and is surrendering his length when Maldonado steps over his slow left jab to counter him. They clinch and Maldonado tries to wrench free with an uppercut that looks like it would have had nasty intentions if Sanchez hadn't wisely pinned his upper arm. Sanchez is now trying to hang back and time the faster man but it's a failing effort.

Maldonado shutout (except that he too was knocked down in the 1st)

I'm not 100% sure, it would be a 10-10 round but if he was dominated besides that, I think it stays 10-9 for Maldonado. also, Rodela was supposed to fight Molina (which would've been MUCH better but he was in a car accident so I hear) so it was a last minute replacement

    On to light welterweights...

4-0 (4) Ivan Redkach takes on late replacement 3-4-2 Carlos Hernandez (no relation).

I wonder why the Ukrainian Ivan Redkach has the nickname "Juanito" and has the Mexican flag on his trunks? he got wobbled in the first round, too

    Round 1

Redkach feels out Hernandez for the better part of a minute and gets tagged coming forward with an overhand right that stuns him. Redkach begins to box more cautiously. They step on each other's feet and Hernandez tackles the taller man to the mat. Hernandez is drawing Redkach in and then leaping forward with jabs and lead rights. Redkach grabs Hernandez and is pushed into a corner. Hernandez drums him on the body with right hands where his gloves are turned upside down (therefore hitting with the area below the pinky).

    Underdog's round. 10-9 Hernandez

    Round 2

Ivan keeps his lead right foot inside the left foot of Hernandez. He clearly has better footwork but isn't exploiting it with any meaningful punching (just slaps when Hernandez tucks his chin and tries to maul in or rush him into a corner). Redkach jabs in and out. He lands a short combo to the body and comes back there with a left hand. Fischer explains that he picked up the "Juanito" nickname in his amateur days for being such a prolific bodypuncher (like a Mexican). In an awkward exchange on the inside, Redkach lands a left uppercut to the beltline (pretty unintentional in appearance) and Hernandez takes a seat. Hernandez takes a whole minute to recover and maybe thanks to him selling it the referee takes a point from Redkach.

    Round 3

Redkach tries to put together a sequence of body punches with both hands but Hernandez dives into his armpit forcing Redkach to put him in a headlock. The ref is getting annoyed and warns Hernandez for diving in headfirst. He does it again and the ref disqualifies him!

The replays show Hernandez blatantly leading with his head many times; it's lucky neither of them got cut (more for the fighters' sake...a cut stoppage/NC wouldn't really be much more unsatisfying than what we got).
