I'm aware. It's always a bit unsettling to watch it happen before your eyes, though.

There is nothing like that crushed expression that creeps up on them. They were all excited about turning pro, and then all of a sudden

    Round 1

Valadez gives pursuit, stabbing his left jab out at the southpaw Lopez. Valadez starts to mix it up and lead with hooks after dipping at the knees to spring inside. Valadez lands a glancing combo against the front of Lopez. Valadez keeps pressuring but isn't able to get within range. Stabbing jab from Valadez. BIG RIGHT HAND DROPS LOPEZ. Out of nowhere. Wow. Lopez sits on the mat with his palms resting open to brace himself, and takes a few seconds to recover before pushing up. Valadez pushes Lopez to the ropes and is met with a spirited flurry to the flanks as he bores in. Lopez dances outside and parries Valadez's left jab with his right.

    10-8 Valadez

    Round 2

Valadez sweeps with a hook, just snicking Lopez as he backs up swiftly. Loepz pops the right jab while galloping off to his left. Cuffing flurry by Lopez as Valadez tries to pin him in the corner. Lopez lands several quick hooking shots behind the head by reaching around it with a bit of speed. Valadez retreats to nurse the headache. Valadez now starts to try and use hooks to the body to taunt Lopez and get him back in the corner. Lopez is landing good straight left counters on him while keeping his feet moving. Valadez has a lead right blocked. They both yo-yo their jab, just measuring. Valadez flurries against gloves trying to push Loepz into the corner. Lopez circles left and flicks out right jabs. Valadez undercuts to the body, digging hard. Lopez keeps his distance. Lead right to the nose snaps Lopez's head back.

20-17 Valadez, but that round was close.

    Round 3

Valadez is starting to really dig in with those low cutters to the body. He's almost pinning Lopez in the corners with the downstairs attack but finds him a slippery customer. Valadez is very patient, staying compact and wasting nothing as he scans for openings with slightly downturned eyes - like a miniature Latino poor man's McCallum. Lopez just slides around to his left in wide circles, spoiling and throwing defensive jabs out of his southpaw stance. Valadez is able to break through with his body attack and land some glancing combos.

    30-26 Ramon Valadez

    Round 4

Valadez steps inside carefully, pulling his head back to slip right jabs and refraining from throwing anything while not set (or with his target not firmly sighted). Valadez has thrown almost nothing in the first minute, just measuring distance with some slow extensions of his left arm and always quickly recoiling to reform his tight guard. Lopez is popping right jabs but not getting any through. Wide right hook by Lopez is back-stepped by Valadez. Now the left jab of Valadez starts to snap out a bit harder, and is tripled up. Southpaw 1-2 from Lopez, dodged and parried but not countered. Valadez still isn't throwing much save an exploring jab. 1-2 lands by Lopez. Now Lopez ducks a jab and lands a right hook. Valadez suddenly gets in a power shot and Lopez is saved by the ropes!! Valadez unleashes several harmful body shots! They exchange toe to toe, Valadez landing the harder stuff!

Lopez almost stole that round...or rather, Valadez very nearly gave it away with his 2+ minutes of inactivity and then getting caught a few times. The end was all Valadez. So close.

    Round 5

Stiff jabs from Valadez, on target. Lopez dances around, taking hops to his left before pushing up on his toes in rhythm in a set pattern. Valadez is just watching him, trying to crack the code. Hard, accurate right hand by Valadez. Lopez wings a right hook as he turns Valadez, and hits mostly glove. Lopez suddenly changes directions to glide to his right and then very rapidly resumes his movements to the left. Lopez is staying outside. Lead right by Valadez snaps his head back. Long jab to the body by Valadez. Lopez stays outside, hugging the ropes. Now they clinch as Lopez flurries to the body and gets his arms pinned under Valadez's. Lopez backs up and lands a double right hook to the head of Valadez as he lures him toward the ropes, but isn't able to steal this one.

    50-44 Valadez

    Round 6

Valadez is walking in and spearing with his jab methodically, trying to avoid the right jabs of Lopez and surrendering many opportunities to corner him while swaying back out of the way of counter feints. Valadez tries to set Loepz up against the ropes and work the body, but lets him escape while bobbing and weaving against anticipated counter attacks. Lopez circles left and jabs. Valadez leads with his right and doesn't reach. Valadez jabs and doesn't reach. Lopez is maintaining good distance. Right hook to the body by Lopez as Valadez ducks forward and misplaces his lead foot. Lopez swats aside a Valadez right and hacks his way in, grabbing and hitting in the clinch.

    10-9 Lopez

    59-54 Valadez

I don't think allowing Lopez to go the distance is really a setback for Valadez. He looked good in there. Calm and controlled.

Valadez wins a unanimous decision; 59-54 on all three cards.

    ...and the crowd goes wild.

These Club Nokia cards always have great atmospheres...or maybe it's just the few shrieking drunk girls.

LMAO @ how they just showed the blatant low blow in the highlights of Abner's win.

It's a GBP broadcast, so it's hard to knock them for spinning Mares-Agbeko to seem like a close but fair decision.

Joe Martinez is presenting Mares his IBF belt in the ring.

Mares still has bandages spanning his left eye socket.

Fischer interviews him. Mares dedicates his title win to not only his family but to Golden Boy Promotions.

Ahh, that's right. The belt that Mares lifted on the night actually still belongs to Agbeko (as it customary). This one presented tonight is the one Mares can permanently keep - even if he "loses" it.
