As has been repeated by myself and countless others - GBP doesn't much pamper their up and comers. Brea's been stopped several times but look at his opposition.

First up on the televised card is Salvador Rios (Ronny's older brother) in his debut, a 4 rounder at welterweight versus Stephen Rubalcava who lost his debut two months ago on points.

    Round 1

Rios immediately starts to force the issue with body hooks that have Rubalcavas wincing and on the run. Rios runs him down and hammers him with hooks and uppercuts. Rubalcavas guards his face and dips at his knees, trying to push Rios back with counter jabs but ineffective with them. Rios whips the body with hard underhands from both sides and keeps Rubalcavas backing straight up by smashing his guard with lead rights up high. Rubalcavas suddenly flurries while straightening up his posture but Rios easily blocks everything. Rubalcavas is walked into a corner and Rios grinds pendulum shots into his body.

    10-9 Rios

Yeah. I like that his instinct is to not headhunt when his opponent puts on the earmuffs, though.

    Round 2

Rios keeps walking forward shoveling the flanks of Rubalcavas. Rios then starts breaking the high guard apart as the forearms of Rubalcavas waver a bit, and lands with an uppercut. After a minute of bodily punishment Rubalcavas spits out his mouthpiece as a right lead bangs flush on his chin, with his back to the ropes, and Rios is declared the winner.

Now, undefeated welterweight Antonio Orozco takes on the well-traveled and durable Humberto Tapia.

    Round 1

Orozco bounces around a bit, bobbing and feinting and mixing in the 1-2. He then gets creative with his combos as he settles into a rhythm on his feet: hooking off the jab, jabbing off the lead hook, opening up with lead rights and loosing salvos. Tapia steps back and rolls with the assaults but is getting tagged (but standing up to it well). Orozco is a busy little bee, attacking frequently and barely stopping his footwork for a moment. Tapia boxes well enough to keep from getting totally suffocated with punches but is clearly outclassed in speed and power.

Orozco is a bull. I like his style and activity. Lets see if he can end this early

    Round 2

Tapia chops with a right hand that Orozco ducks under, and Orozco jabs him twice quickly in the face. Tapia begins to circle left and look for right hands while Orozco bounces on his toes and lays down a liberal coat of jabs, lead hooks, straight rights, and uppercuts - not putting together too many shots in combination, nor committing to landing cleanly, but throwing often enough to discourage Tapia from responding in the early going. A right hand does get through for Tapia when Orozco takes a moment off. Tapia has very good head movement and is able to tilt away from a few hooks and turn his gloves out to deflect the ones that get too close for comfort. Tapia begins to float his own jab and tries to push Orozco back. Orozco is not unable to fight backing up, but is less effective with jabs and lead rights missing. Tapia digs in with some body shots and may have come close to stealing the round.

Screw it, I'll give it to him. 19-19

    Round 3

Tapia keeps working with what brought him success in the last round: coming forward, moving his head side to side, and leading with jabs. He walks into a straight right hand and is clearly buzzed for a moment but quickly recovers before Orozco can try to finish. Tapia leads with an uppercut that partially lands on a moving Orozco but once Orozco plants his feet he lands another straight right. Tapia keeps punching and they start to trade freely. Right hands from Tapia and every punch in the book from Orozco, with a nice uppercut landing bang on the chin. This is GREAT action. Four punch stepaway combo from Orozco - Barrera-esque! Tapia comes forward and defends well, no longer exchanging but nullifying Orozco's attacks.

    29-28 Orozco

This is awesome for an undercard fight.

    Round 4

Tapia comes forward to begin the round but is then pushed to the ropes by a snappy forward-leaning string of punches by Orozco. Tapia is protecting himself with his right hand and throwing upperhooks to the body. Orozco keeps throwing fast and flashy combos that bleed through the defenses of Tapia but don't damage him too badly due to his proficient rolling. Orozco takes a low blow and is pushed to the ropes and manages to defend well while grimacing in pain as Tapia tries to rough him up. He is offered a moment to recover but declines. A great exchange up to the bell.

    39-37 Orozco

    Round 5

Orozco steps into a hard right hand that thuds on the gloves and may have been a showstopper if it landed. Tapia comes forward and jabs from a low-left-hand stance. Orozco begins to slow down and pick his shots more patiently and Tapia wisely brings his hands up to sandwich his chin. Orozco throws more selectively now, trying to be accurate but finding Tapia a slippery target despite his height. Orozco is changing directions and throwing in spurts, keeping Tapia turning. Tapia nearly catches him flush with a reaching left hook. Orozco doubles his jab and ducks a pair of uppercuts from Tapia. Orozco dances left and then right and flicks his jab to end the round, with Tapia eying him warily.

    49-46 Orozco

    Round 6

Tapia slings a long lead right and keeps Orozco hushed up for a moment, then misses a hook. Orozco starts coming forward and opening up, getting through with accurate little flurries and single shots. Tapia times one such flurry with a good right hand to the cheekbone but as Doug Fischer points out lacks power (and would not be a mere journeyman if he had some, as everything else is about his game is in order). Orozco ducks, taps each side of the body and punches his way upright. Tapia throws a good 1-2 but Orozco is able to quickly block the cross after eating the jab. Tapia tries another 1-2 and is countered hard with a lead right that turns his head. Tapia tries to loop the right hand around the gloves of Orozco and is able to muscle him into a corner and keep the right hand going like a woodpecker, but didn't quite overpower him enough to take the round (although it wouldn't have helped him in the scoring anyway).

    59-55 Orozco
