What a treat that was, though. Tapia is one of my favorite lower-weight journeymen. He doesn't give anything away easily.

 

Jonathan Bobadilla vs. Juan Alfonso Figueroa - 4 rounds at 140 lbs.

Round 1

Bobadilla boxes nicely, timing the rushes of Figueroa with right hands as Figueroa goes for broke with left and right haymakers.

Round 2

Bobadilla catches the wild charging Figueroa and ties him up, finding this safer than trying to counter the unpredictable attacks. Bobadilla begins to angle himself around so that he's holding Figueroa with his right arm and pinning Figueroa's left to his body, and banging freely to the body with left hooks. Bobadilla tries to set a trap by backing up but leaving a jab hanging up in the air where he anticipates Figueroa's chin to be as he runs forward. Figueroa has absolutely no offensive technique and is purely brawling. Bobadilla wisely sticks to his strategy of clinching and punching with the free hand rather than get into blind exchanges.

 

That one between the first two rounds, doing the belly dance along the ropes with the midriff shirt on?! :love

 

Round 3

Figueroa wings punches from his hips and Bobadilla gets himself past them quickly enough to lean against him and throw body punches. Figueroa lunges at him and winds up with Bobadilla behind him. Figueroa starts trying to jab but clearly doesn't know how to use the punch. Bobadilla easily backs away from a wild overhand right and then cannonballs his way into Figueroa's chest with a little shoeshine. Again an overhand right misses and Figueroa is countered. Bobadilla is being made to look very good here, especially defensively.

I can't see how Figueroa has a single professional win, let alone 6. The three decisions he earned must have been scored based on aggression alone.

 

Round 4

Figueroa hustles Bobadilla into a corner and starts throwing uppercuts with both hands (as he doesn't really have a stance either way insofar as orthodox or southpaw - just totally square with his toes facing forward). Bobadilla gets tagged a couple of times but punches his way off the ropes while tucking his head in. Bobadilla grinds the top of his head into Figueroa's chest and plugs right hands to the body. Figueroa tries to line him up with an overhand right but can't even come close to landing clean. Bobadilla again braves the inside as he throws to the body and tucks his chin. Figueroa uppercuts him in the gonads. Bobadilla then retaliates with a big right hand with bad intentions that barely misses, and a moment later and they butt heads as Bobadilla's momentum brings him forward (simultaneously, Figueroa lands ANOTHER low blow uppercut that looks pretty intentional). Bobadilla loses a point as a result. Figueroa eats a 1-2 and keeps trying to load up on a big overhand right. Bobadilla backs up and counters.

That round should be scored 9-9 (10-9 win for Bobadilla but he loses the point per the referee's instructions).

There's something really wrong with that statement. :-( There was nothing close about this.

Figueroa has less technique than some Toughman competitors.
