Apparently Russell's ring name is "Mister". As in "Mister Gary Russell Jr." :think

    That is...not great.

What do you make of Russell as a prospect?

I like how the cameraman is just blatantly zooming in on the hottest ring girl's ass, while she's throwing out t-shirts to the crowd.

Get that fat dude outta there.

He's good. The speed is obvious, the power seems legit enough, and he's both technical and relaxed in his combination punching. He's got a pretty busy schedule, from the looks of it - this was his fourth show of the year, and he's back in there in a couple of weeks.

Featherweight could use some young blood.

I could see him right in the mix between 126-130 in the next two or three years. He might be a little small to compete at LW, so hopefully he's able to keep making weight comfortably. He's still a fairly young buck.

    The main event has arrived.

Frankie Gomez vs. Jaime Orrantia, welterweights.

    Gomez is 3-0 (3), and Orrantia is 13-27-5 (4)

    Round 1

Doug Fischer making a big deal out of Gomez, being the next big thing out of East L.A. since ODLH.

The Pitbull does look beastly, launching sledgehammer blows on his pudgy opponent. His accuracy is not great but enough is getting through to have Orrantia in trouble. Gomez calms down and lands a hook, followed by a downward right hand into the mouth and chin of Orrantia. Gomez shows great handspeed with a right uppercut followed immediately by a straight right as soon as he'd recoiled. The referee waves off the bout right at the bell to signify the end of the 1st. There was nothing really happening at the time. Lame.

I haven't seen him on television since his early bouts that were on ShoBox. The speed was always apparent. It's good to see that his power is developing decently. When I watched him pound the **** out of a no-hoper for a few rounds before getting the victory, it seemed clear that he didn't have crushing power.

No, it's definitely not crushing power, but he'll be able to keep guys honest.

    Round 1

Coronel squats down and tries to sneak in on Reyes. Reyes hooks at him and backs him off. Reyes a bit tense, fires a long jab at Coronel. Coronel still making a very small target, bent almost all the way over at the waist, his gloves at his knees. Reyes living by the hook so far. Coronel tries to walk inside and Reyes misses some wild right hands over the head of Coronel, but discourages Coronel from doing any work while inside as he covers the top of his head. Coronel keeps pressing in behind a jab, has a horrible reach disadvantage, and gets hooked out of Reyes' personal space yet again.

Coronel the aggressor, but Reyes landed harder. Neither very accurate.

    Reyes 10-9

****. There's a nasty cut spewing from the top left eyelid of Coronel (criss-crossing the eyebrow), and the fight's over.

Doug Fischer thinks it was from a headbutt (they're not showing a replay), but Reyes is awarded a first round TKO.

They just showed the replay - CLEAR headbutt. It wasn't intentional on either's part, it was just momentum as they were both throwing coming forward at a perpendicular angle. The side of Reyes' head, around the temple, connects clearly with Coronel's eye, very hard.

That's stupid that they don't review that. The kid was undefeated and now has a bull**** loss.

He has very short reach. 3 inches less than average for someone of his height.

Jessie Vargas is the one who got interviewed at the end. He is a genuine prospect, as is Russell (although Russell will be more of a finesse guy - an outboxer rather than a boxer-puncher). He looks like everything Victor Ortiz was promised to be, but has shown a steely resolve already when a veteran gave him some aggravation. Did you catch the clip of his finish? There was one absolute beauty of an uppercut in there...this kid is truly "Vicious". GB has got something here.

Frankie Gomez, the ostensible headliner, looks like just a raw slugger but only had a round to show his stuff before it was waved off, as his victim wasn't nearly as game as Vargas'.

They just showed HL of the Jamie Kavanagh fight which I missed, he looks like a good action fighter.

    Entertaining night, altogether.
