Bout would be part of MGM card on Cinco de Mayo weekend Oscar De La Hoya's decision to meet Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September in a rematch of their 2007 fight has created a void for Cinco de Mayo weekend at the MGM Grand Garden. Traditionally, a major boxing card takes place in Las Vegas that first weekend of May. Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions chief executive officer, said he's looking to bring former welterweight champion Shane Mosley to town to fill the void left by De La Hoya. "I'm working on Shane for May 3 as we speak," Schaefer said Thursday. "We'd like to be part of a card at the MGM that weekend." Mosley (44-5, 37 knockouts) last fought Nov. 10 when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto at New York's Madison Square Garden. Mosley, 36, said he planned to fight in 2008, so the May 3 date would work. Possible opponents are Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) or Kermit Cintron (29-1, 27 KOs). There was speculation that Antonio Margarito might be Mosley's opponent, but Schaefer said that won't happen. Schaefer might be the busiest person in boxing at the moment. He is trying to finalize the rematch between De La Hoya and Mayweather, expected to be contested in mid-September in Las Vegas or Southern California. He has been putting the finishing touches on an April 12 fight at Mandalay Bay between light heavyweights Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe. Now Schaefer is trying to get a fight for Mosley. "There's a lot of moving targets at the moment," Schaefer said. "But we hope to get a deal for Shane done shortly." Full story: http://www.lvrj.com/sports/13931352.html
Wow, Mosley-Williams would be GREAT! De La Hoya to the undercard where he belongs with a tune-up fight. A less interesting, but not by much would be Mosley-Cintron match-up. I'm sure Mosley would defeat Cintron so if they want a great farewell fight for Mosley they should choose Cintron. If they want a more fan-friendly, it's gonna be Williams. So they made Mayweather-DLH. That's a shame. But they can compensate us with a FREE May 3 card with a Mosley-Williams main event, DLH vs. tune-up AND something more interesting in the undercard. We deserve it. Mosley is all class if he takes on Williams.
Anyways... Wouldn't it be nice if GBP would switch Oscar's and Mosley's positon? -Oscar to fight a big name in May like Cintron with a possible clash with Cotto later this year -Mosley to fight a tune-up in the undercard and a fight Floyd in September It's logical. It would be easy to change. Wouldn't effect the sales seriously (may 3 could be a PPV if the main event would be Oscar-Cintron). And of course everyone would be happy. Thoughts?
I feel really sorry for Shane who probably feels betrayed by his own promoter and friend. After all it wasn't only him, but Oscar and most of all Mayweather who said that a Mosley-Money fight is possible. Why on earth would Oscar fight Floyd again and vice-versa? But no logic in here, Oscar IS fighting Floyd again, he IS taking a tune-up in May while Mosley is fighting the riskier fights for LESS MONEY. Even in the Cotto defeat he deserves better. Well… In the and at least we are going to root for him more than for Oscar…
Mosley will probably get the Mayweather fight in the end. But I would love to see Mosley-Williams or Mosley-Cintron...Shane truly is a man who goes out of his way to take the hard fights! Who else would fight guys like Collazo, Wright, Forrest, even Cruz when he did not have to?
Mosley is a badass, thats for sure. He should fight Cintron, take his belt and then rematch Cotto and let his hands go more. Then he could fight DLH again and win and retire a rich man.
5 yrs ago it would have been a great fight but at 36 SSM won't stand a chance, PBF would win a tough but claer UD.
If PBF fights Mosley than the haters will just be saying that he was picking on another old fighter, and one that Cotto had already beat. So, Mosley should fight Cintron, that's a winnable fight for him. He shouldn't go near Paul Williams, tall fighters have given him problems and Williams would be his tallest fighter to date.
